Set up your Square account

Who is this article for?
Only account owners can create a Square account.

About creating your Square account

Square connects every aspect of your business, so you can focus on your customers. It doesn’t matter what you sell, Square has apps, features, integrations, and hardware, built to work together and simplify your day-to-day. Square helps you run your business — start accepting payments, onboard your team, generate robust sales and inventory reports, and reduce your administrative time.

Before you begin

The steps in this guide are the setup instructions to create a Square account. If you already completed one of the steps, you can skip to the next one. To get started, sign up for a Square account.

If you get stuck at any point, contact our Square Support team. If you successfully created an account, you can call Square Support Monday through Friday between 9am to 5pm, Melbourne time.

Step 1: Choose your business structure

When you sign up for an account with Square, you’ll be asked to provide additional information about your business. The information we request from you when you set up your Square account can vary depending on the type of business you run or its share structure. Learn how to choose your business structure.

Step 2: Onboard your business

You’ll also be asked to provide personal information to verify your personal identity. Banking industry regulations require that all financial institutions verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. Even if you plan on using Square as a business or organisation, to create a Square account you must provide this information.

Step 3: Link your bank account

Before you receive your first transfer from Square, you need to add a valid Australian bank account to your Square account. If you process sales before your bank account is verified, your funds will sit in your Square balance. Learn how to link and edit your bank account.

Step 4: Set up transfer options

After you activate your Square account and link a bank account, you can choose to receive your Square balance via the standard transfer schedule, manual transfer, or instant transfer. Learn how to set up and edit transfer options.

Step 5: Sign in to your Square account

Once your account is created, you can use the Square Point of Sale app or your Square Dashboard. Find out how to sign in to your Square account.

Step 6: Order Square hardware

If you already selected and received Square hardware, you can skip to the next step.

Square has Point of Sale hardware to help you accept in-person sales quickly. Visit Square Shop to order your hardware or visit a local retail store to buy hardware in person.

Step 7: Create your item library

As you add your business details to Square, you can create, edit and manage items from your item library in Square Dashboard. Learn how to create and edit items.

Step 8: Set up your team

When you’re ready to start selling, make sure that your team members are too. Learn how to add and manage team members.
