Beta | Item Splits

Thank you for participating in the Item Splits for Square Restaurant. This beta test provides the ability to split payments for a given item across multiple customer checks, either evenly or in a custom fashion.

A paid subscription to Square for Restaurants and being part of the new Square for Restaurant experience is required to test this feature.

Benefits of this feature

  • Improve your diners’ experience - Guests can now pay exactly for what they ordered, down to fractional portions like ⅓ of a bottle of wine.

  • Faster Checkout - Reduce the time your waiters spend calculating totals and waiting on larger groups to solve disputes about shared costs.

Current Limitations

  • 3rd party integrations are unsupported at this time - Item splits will not sync or show up on your 3rd party integrations.

  • Item Splits are only available on your Square Restaurant POS (paid subscription required).

  • This feature is only available on the next generation of our Square for Restaurants POS.

  • Item Sales Reporting will appear distorted during beta.

Note: These limitations will be addressed in upcoming Square for Restaurants app versions.

Get Started

To start using this feature you will need to enable the new Square for Restaurant experience on one of your devices.

  1. Head to Square Dashboard

  2. Locate the Order & Pay capabilities feature.

  3. Click Preview to see what new features are included in this experience.

  4. Click Manage next to Devices enabled.

  5. Click Enable more devices

  6. Select the devices you'd like to turn on the experience for.

    1. Please note that checks open on the existing POS experience will not show up on the new Order & Pay experience. You will need to close out all existing orders before enabling.

  7. Click Continue

  8. Click Enable

    1. Once toggled on, you will see a warning. Updating your POS will require restarting your app so we recommend that you don’t update during service.

  9. Restart your device

To Split an Item

  1. In the Restaurant App, click Orders > Select a Check to bring it back into the cart

  2. Click Actions > Split check

  3. Click Split by item > Select your item > Click Split item
    Add splits or adjust amounts > Create new Check

  4. Click Save

  5. Return to Orders to complete payment for newly created checks

FAQs

Can I Item Split a Combo?

Item Splitting a Combo is not supported during Beta.

My Item Sales Reporting is not showing the correct information. Why?

Item Sales Reporting will appear distorted during Beta. You will see the split items as follows:

Example 1: Item Split (1 bottle of wine was split 4 ways)
1 Unit Sold
4 Items Sold

Example 2: Item Split (1 plate of nachos was split 6 ways)
1 Unit Sold
6 Items Sold

We are working towards fixing this so that the report shows:

Example 1: Item Split (1 bottle of wine was split 4 ways)
1 Unit Sold
1 Item Sold

Example 2: Item Split (1 plate of nachos was split 6 ways)
1 Unit Sold
1 Item Sold
