Manage Bill Pay Payment Limits

Your Square account will fall into one of the following two tiers for Bill Pay limits depending on your account security settings and payment transaction history.

Tier 1

Tier 2

Tier 2 Eligibility

To unlock your account for the higher Tier 2 limits, you must enable 2-Step Verification. This process is important for the security of your account and to protect you against account takeovers or other fraudulent activity.

Once your account has two-step verification enabled, Square will determine your bill pay tier based on your payment transaction history. Sellers that are relatively new to Square or have infrequent transactions will typically start in Tier 1 with lower limits. Once a seller meets the transaction activity thresholds, they will be upgraded to Tier 2. Square will regularly review your transaction history to determine your bill pay tier.

Enabling 2-step verification will give you the option to receive an SMS message or use an authentication app for an added layer of security when logging in. To get started:

Enable text message verification

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard and click Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in and security.

  2. Under 2-step verification, click Enable. Add your primary mobile phone number and click Continue.

  3. You’ll then receive a verification code via text. Enter the verification code in the field on your Dashboard and click Verify.

Enable voice verification:

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard and click Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in and security.

  2. Under 2-step verification, click Enable > Use another method > Voice call

  3. Add your phone number and click Continue.

You’ll receive a verification code via phone call. Enter the verification code in the field on your Dashboard and click Verify.

Enable an authentication app

  1. Download an authentication app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy.

  2. Log in to your online Square Dashboard and click Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in and security.

  3. Under 2-step verification, click Enable > Use another method.

  4. Select Authentication app > Next.

  5. On your device, open your authentication app, then scan the barcode. On your dashboard, click Next.

  6. Enter the verification code generated in your authentication app.

  7. Click Verify.

Note: If the QR code is not scanning from your authentication app, click Can't scan the QR code? to manually enter a key code.
