Federal Tax Filings

Form 941, Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return

The IRS only allows employers to file one tax return per quarter. When Square Payroll attempted to file your tax return, it The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows employers to correct any misreported payroll on the Form 941 by submitting Form 941-X, Adjusted Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return.

Here are some general guidelines for completing your adjusted return:

  1. Download Form 941-X.

  2. Obtain a copy of the Form 941 that was originally filed. This is needed for Part 3 Column 2, “amount originally reported.”

  3. Submit your completed return to the address listed on the form.

Form 944, Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows employers to correct any misreported payroll on the Form 944 by submitting Form 944-X, Adjusted Employer’s Annual Federal Tax Return.

Here are some general guidelines for completing your adjusted return:

  1. Download Form 944-X

  2. Obtain a copy of the Form 944 that was originally filed. This is needed for Part 3 Column 2, “amount originally reported”

  3. Submit your completed return to the address listed on the form.

Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows employers to correct any misreported payroll on the Wage and Tax Statement form by submitting Form W-2c.

Here are some guidelines for completing your adjusted return:

  1. You can either submit Form(s) W-2c online through the Social Security Administration’s Business Services Online website or by ordering Form(s) W-2c from the IRS and submitting by mail.

  2. Obtain a copy of the Form W-2(s) that was originally filed. Use this to complete the “previously reported” section of the correction.

  3. Fill in the Correct Information columns with the correct amounts

  4. If applicable, send Copy 1 - State, City, or Local Tax Department to the necessary state, city or local tax agencies.

  5. Submit your completed return online or mail to the address listed on the form.

Form 1099-NEC, Miscellaneous Income

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows employers to correct any misreported payroll on the Wage and Tax Statement form by submitting an amended 1099-NEC.

Here are some guidelines for completing your adjusted return:

  1. Order Form(s) 1099-NEC and 1096 on the IRS’ website.

  2. Fill in the correct 1099-NEC using the correct information.

  3. Remember to check the box CORRECTED at the top of each corrected form.

  4. Fill out Form 1096: - Box 3 - Total number of forms - Box 5 - Total amount reported with this Form 1096

  5. Submit your completed return to the address listed on the form.
