  • About allergen and dietary tracking

Allergen and dietary tracking lets front-of-house staff capture guest allergen and dietary preference information at the seat level. This information appears as an indicator in the POS cart, propagates to KDS tickets, and prints on kitchen receipts for every fire associated with that seat. The information also appears on customer-facing receipts.

Predefined allergens include: Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish, Dairy, Gluten, Eggs, Soy, and Fish. Dietary preferences such as vegetarian, vegan, and halal are tracked separately. You can also enter custom allergen information using a free-text field for any allergens not included in the predefined list.

    Before you begin

    • You need a Square for Restaurants Plus or Premium subscription.

    • Seat management must be turned on for your point of sale device, and your cart must be sorted by seat. Learn how to manage seats in your restaurant.

    • Available on Square Register, Square Terminal, and iOS devices.

    Add allergens to a seat

    1. From an open check sorted by seat, tap the three dots (…) next to the seat name.

    2. Tap Allergy.

    3. Select one or more allergens from the predefined list (Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish, Dairy, Gluten, Eggs, Soy, Fish).

    4. Tap Save.

An allergen indicator appears next to the seat name in the cart. The selected allergens are included on KDS tickets and printed kitchen receipts for all fires from that seat.

Add dietary preferences to a seat

    1. From an open check sorted by seat, tap the three dots (…) next to the seat name.

    2. Tap Allergy.

    3. Select the applicable dietary preferences (such as vegetarian, vegan, or halal).

    4. Tap Save.

Dietary preferences appear alongside allergen information on KDS tickets and printed kitchen receipts.

    Edit or remove allergen information

    1. From an open check sorted by seat, tap the three dots (…) next to the seat name.

    2. Tap Allergy.

    3. Update your selections or deselect all items to remove allergen information from the seat.

    4. Tap Save.

    Understand where allergen information appears

    • POS cart: An allergen indicator appears next to the seat name when allergens or dietary preferences are assigned.

    • KDS tickets: Allergen and dietary details display on kitchen tickets for each fire from that seat.

    • Printed kitchen receipts: Allergen and dietary details print on kitchen receipts.

    • Customer receipts: Allergen information prints on customer-facing receipts.

    Known limitations

    • Allergen and dietary information is tied to the seat, not to an individual guest. If a guest moves to a different seat, you need to re-enter their information on the new seat.

    • The three dots (…) menu appears only when the cart is sorted by seat.

    • Information persists only for the duration of the check and is cleared when the check is closed.
