With Split Bill, customers can easily split a bill or use multiple forms of tender to complete a payment with Square. For each form of tender accepted, a separate receipt will be issued. Each receipt will display the total sale amount, all items sold and the type of tender used. 

Note: Remember, when you accept cash or other tender payments, Square doesn’t actually process any funds.

Split a Payment Between Multiple Forms of Tender

  1. Tap the blue Charge button.
  2. Tap Split in the top-right of the screen.
  3. Tap Add Cash, Add Card or Swipe or Add Other, and enter the amount you’d like to charge for the form of tender.
  4. Tap Tender or Charge to process the payment. Note: for chip cards, instruct your customer to insert their card so the ‘Charge’ button becomes active/blue.
  5. Tap Continue to return to the payment screen to collect remaining balance.
  6. Continue processing the additional tender types until the entire sale has been completed.

For example, for a £100 payment split between four friends paying £31 cash, and the remaining balance evenly across three payment cards (two chip + PIN cards and one contactless card or device):

  1. Tap the blue Charge button.
  2. Tap Split in the top-right of the screen.
  3. Tap Add Cash once.
  4. Tap Card, insert or swipe twice.
  5. Tap Add Contactless once. The payment evenly is split among 4 payment methods. Tap the Cash amount to edit the amount from £25 to £31. The card amounts auto-adjust based on the remaining balance due.
  6. Tap Tender in the Cash field. Select the cash amount received or enter a custom amount for view the change due. Select the receipt preference for the customer paying with cash.
  7. Tap Continue to return to the payment screen to collect the remaining balance due.
  8. Insert the chip card into the Square Reader to ignite the blue Charge button. Tap Charge. Ask the customer to enter their PIN on the screen, followed by the green tick button to authorise the card. Select the receipt preference for the customer and tap Continue.
  9. Repeat step 8 for the second chip + PIN customer.
  10. Tap Charge for the Contactless payment. The Square Reader displays one green light. Hold your contactless card or device to authorise the card. Select the receipt preference for the customer and tap New Sale.

Note: You must complete the split bill transaction until there is no longer a remaining balance for the transaction to be completed. If the split bill is not completed in full, and you tap ‘Cancel Payment’ all payments collected are now voided, including all authorised card payments in the split bill in which receipts were issued. If you fail to complete the split transaction in full, and the customer(s) have departed, you can record the final balance due as “Other Tender” with a note indicating the funds loss, to avoid voiding the cash and partial card payments collected.

Smart Split

To split a payment evenly across multiple payment cards:

  1. Tap the blue Charge button.
  2. Tap Split in the top-right of the screen.
  3. Tap the + sign in top right corner < Add Cash, Card or Contactless for each payment method you’ll use to complete the payment. The amount due will automatically split evenly across the total number of payment methods added.
  4. Add cash and tap Charge or insert card and tap Charge to process each form of the payment. 
  5. Tap Continue to return to the payment screen to complete payment for the remaining balance.

Troubleshooting Tips for Split Tender Payments

  • A split bill payment isn’t complete until the entire amount of the sale has been processed and there’s no remaining balance. 
  • Tapping the arrow on the top of your screen before completing an entire sale will clear any amount previously recorded for this payment.
