Set Age Restrictions on Items and Require Age Verification with Square for Retail

With Square for Retail, you have the ability to set age restrictions on items in your Square library. When an age-restricted item is added to the cart, Square offers an age-verification feature to prompt for a customer ID check by the employee handling the checkout. Sellers who offer age-restricted products must follow local regulations regarding age verification whenever a customer purchases one of these items, such as the case with alcohol or tobacco products. 

Anyone using Square for Retail can receive prompts to manually verify age when adding an age-restricted item to the cart. With the Square for Retail Plus subscription, you will have the ability to verify age by scanning a US or Canada driver’s licence or state ID. ID scanning can be performed with a compatible 2D barcode scanner or with the device camera when using the iOS app.  You also have the option to verify age by entering the buyer’s date of birth manually.

2D Scanner Requirement

A 2D scanner, such as the Zebra DS series, is required to scan the complex barcodes on driver’s licences and state IDs. Not all barcode scanners that are compatible with Square are 2D capable. Common scanners, such as the Zebra LS series, are 1D and only work for scanning standard item barcodes. Check your model number to ensure compatibility with age verification.

You can test a scanner for 2D capability by scanning the barcode below and listening for the beep. If the scanner beeps, that means it can read the 2D barcode and is capable of scanning IDs. If it does not beep, it is likely a 1D scanner and cannot be used to scan IDs.

Note: Cameras used with the Square Retail POS app on iOS devices meet the 2D scanning requirements.

Set an Age Restriction

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, navigate to Items > Item Library, then click on an item to add an age restriction to. 

  2. Navigate to Age restriction, then click Set

  3. By default, you will have three options for an age restriction:

    • Buyer must be 18+

    • Buyer must be 19+

    • Buyer must be 21+

  4. Choose a minimum age restriction, then click Set

  5. Once a minimum age restriction has been set, click Save

Set a Custom Age Restriction

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, navigate to Items > Item Library, then click on an item to add an age restriction to. 

  2. Navigate to Age restriction, then click Set

  3. Under All Locations, click Age restriction > click Custom

  4. Under Custom age restriction, input your chosen age, then click Set

  5. Once a minimum age restriction has been set, click Save

Remove an Age Restriction

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, navigate to Items > Item Library, then click on the item to remove an age restriction from. 

  2. Navigate to Age restriction, then click Remove

  3. Once the age restriction has been removed, click Save

Bulk Edit Age Restrictions

  1. From your online Square Dashboard, navigate to Items > Item Library, then click on all items to add an age restriction to. 

  2. Once all items have been selected, click Edit items

  3. Under the Age restriction column, you will have the following options:

    • None

    • Buyer must be 18+

    • Buyer must be 19+

    • Buyer must be 21+

    • Custom

  4. Repeat adding a default buyer age restriction or custom age restriction for all items selected. 

  5. Once all changes have been made, click Update variations to save changes.

Sell Age Restricted Items with the Square for Retail POS App

You can sell your age-restricted items with the Square for Retail POS app. 

Note: When selling age-restricted items, there are a few possible reasons an age verification may fail. You may receive an error message with one of the following:

  • Invalid DOB entered

  • ID has expired

  • DOB does not meet age restriction

  • ID barcode unable to be scanned

For Square for Retail Plus subscribers without a compatible 2D barcode scanner or camera connected

  1. Choose an age-restricted item, then tap Add to cart.
  2. From the Age verification screen, add the buyer’s date of birth in the mm/dd/yyyy format.
  3. Tap Confirm to add the item to the cart.
  4. If the date of birth entered meets the minimum age requirement for the item, the item will be added to the cart.
  5. If additional age-restricted items are added to the cart, the date entered for the first age-restricted item that is successfully added to the cart will be reused. This way, you will not have to re-enter the same buyer’s date of birth multiple times in the same transaction.
  6. Once all items have been added to the cart, tap Charge to complete the transaction.

For Square for Retail Plus subscribers with a compatible 2D barcode scanner or camera connected

  1. Choose an age-restricted item, then tap Add to cart.
  2. From the Age verification screen, scan the buyer’s ID to add the item to the cart with a compatible 2D barcode scanner or camera.
  3. If the date of birth scanned off of the ID scan meets the minimum age requirement for the item, the item will be added to the cart.
  4. If additional age-restricted items are added to the cart, the date used for the first age-restricted item that is successfully added to the cart will be reused. This way, you will not have to re-enter the same buyer’s date of birth multiple times in the same transaction.
  5. Once all items have been added to the cart, tap Charge to complete the transaction.

For Square for Retail Free subscribers

  1. Choose an age-restricted item, then tap Add to cart.
  2. From the Age verification screen, select Yes or No for whether the buyer meets the age restriction.
  3. Tap Confirm to add the item to the cart.
  4. If additional age-restricted items are added to the cart, the date used for the first age-restricted item that is successfully added to the cart will be reused. This way, you will not have to re-enter the same buyer’s date of birth multiple times in the same transaction.
  5. Once all items have been added to the cart, tap Charge to complete the transaction.
