Create a passkey
About passkeys
Passkeys are a more secure and faster alternative to traditional passwords. Unlike passwords, which require you to remember and enter them manually, a passkey binds your account to a specific device or a cloud service, allowing you to access your account simply by using your device's biometric features (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN.
With Square, you can sign into Square Dashboard on a web browser by using your device’s biometrics (like a fingerprint or facial recognition) or a PIN instead of a password.
Before you begin
You have three options for creating a passkey on web browser:
Computers running Windows: Your computer must be running at least Windows 10 software.
Computers running macOS: Your computer must be running at least macOS Ventura software.
Computers running ChromeOS: Your computer must be running at at least ChromeOS 109 software.
Additionally, your computer or mobile device will need a supported browser such as:
Google Chrome 109, or higher
mac Safari 16, or higher
Microsoft Edge 109, or higher
To create and use a passkey, your device must have the following enabled:
Screen lock
Bluetooth (If you want to use a passkey on a phone to sign in to another computer)
A synced cloud system, such as iCloud, Google Passkey manager, or 1Password, for managing and syncing your passkeys across devices
For an optimal passkey experience, we recommend updating your device to the latest version of its operating system. Depending on your system and browser, creation and use of passkeys may not be supported in private browsing modes like incognito.
Set up a passkey
Setting up a passkey follows the same steps regardless of which OS you use.
Enable Passkey on your account
You can sync up to five passkeys across devices. To do so:
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in and security.
Under Passkeys, click on Create a passkey > Next.
Authenticate using the two-step verification sent to your authentication app. Alternatively, click Use another method to receive a code via text message.
Click Verify.
Register your device
Your browser will take over and create a cryptic key for your Square account.
Follow the instructions of the prompts on your device.
After a passkey is created, it’s added to the Passkeys section. In this section, you can check which passkeys are available across your devices. You can add multiple devices as trusted options to use your passkey.
Sign in to your Square account using a passkey
After you create and save a passkey on your device, you can use the passkey whenever you sign in.
Sign in using passkeys
On the Square sign in screen, click Sign in with a passkey or enter your email address/phone number and click Continue.
Your device will prompt you to sign in either using face recognition or fingerprint authentication.
Sign in using passkeys on another device
Passkeys that are only stored on a desktop can’t be used to log into other devices since desktop cameras can’t scan QR codes. You will need to use a mobile device to scan the QR code and login using your mobile device.
On the Square sign in screen, click Sign in with a passkey or enter your email address/phone number and click Continue.
Your device will prompt you with a QR code—scan the QR code with your mobile device’s camera.
Follow the instructions on your mobile device to get authenticated (e.g. Touch ID, Face ID, PIN code, screen lock pattern).
Remove a passkey
If you want to completely remove a passkey from your Square account, ensure that you delete it from both your account and your device (or Password managers) to fully remove the passkey. You will need to sign in using other passkeys or use your traditional password method to sign into Square.
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in and security.
Scroll down to Passkeys, find the passkey you want to remove, and click Remove.
Authenticate using the two-step verification sent to your authentication app or via text message.
