Custom Attributes and Item Library

With Custom Attributes, you’ll be able to add additional information to your existing and new items, as well as provide contextual information to third-party developers regarding those same items and variations. For example, a business that sells wine may want to store information such as Vintage, Origin and Tasting Notes. Not only can using this information with Custom Attributes be used to help run the business, but it will allow a one-stop shop for managing item information.

If you’re using specific third-party integrations (also known as Apps) with Square, items and/or variations within the Item Library will be given pre-existing fields – also known as Custom Attributes. Custom Attributes are based on a set of details provided by the third-party app being used with Square and can be created and managed from the Items section of your online Square Dashboard. These pre-existing fields can also be viewed by following a few easy steps:

To locate Custom Attributes associated with an item:

  1. Visit Items in your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select an existing item to open the Edit Item page.

  3. Scroll to Custom Attributes.

To locate Custom Attributes associated with an item variation:

  1. Visit Items in your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select an existing item to open the Edit Item page.

  3. Next, select a variation to open the Edit Variation page.

  4. Select Custom Attributes to view or add attributes.

While Custom Attributes will automatically be added to your items depending on which third-party integration you’re using, you can also update them to reflect the most accurate information associated with that item. To update a Custom Attribute:

  1. Visit Items in your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select an existing item or click Create an Item.

  3. From the Edit Item page, select Show Custom Attributes or select Custom Attributes from the Edit Variation page.

Note: Not all third-party integrations will provide pre-existing Custom Attributes. If you are not seeing the option for Custom Attributes within the Item Library, the third-party integration does not support them at this time.

If you’re unsure of which third-party integrations are associated with your Square account, you can check using the steps below:

  1. Visit Apps in your online Square Dashboard.

  2. Select My Apps.
