Create and Manage Custom Attributes

On top of the pre-existing Custom Attributes that you may see when using a third-party integration with Square, you also have the option to create and manage your own. Create custom attributes and link them to items to help add and track additional details about the items in your catalog. Once a custom attribute has been added to an item or item variation, the custom attribute will be available to populate as a column in the item variation table, which helps provide a clear overview of your item’s custom attributes. You can also use the custom attributes to search and filter your item library.

Create a custom attribute

  1. Go to the online Square Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to the item library.

  3. Select Custom Attributes.

  4. Click the Create a custom attribute button.

  5. Enter the Custom Attribute (i.e. Name) and Attribute Type (text, number, selection, toggle).

  6. Click Add to create the custom attribute.

To add the custom attribute to existing items, you will need to edit the applicable items and add the custom attributes.

Add a custom attribute to an item

  1. Go to the online Square Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to the item library.

  3. Select an item from the Item Library.

  4. Scroll to the section labeled Custom Attributes, below the Modifier Sets section.

  5. Select Add custom attribute.

  6. Enter in the Custom attribute, Attribute type and Value.

  7. Select Add  or if you want to enter in additional custom attributes for the item, use the Create and Add Another button.

  8. Once you have added all the custom attributes, Save the Item changes.

Add a custom attribute to a variation

  1. Go to the online Square Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to the item library.

  3. Select an item from the Item Library.

  4. Scroll to the section labeled Variations.

  5. If a variation already exists, select Edit variation details, otherwise select Add Variation.

  6. In the pop-up, select the tab for Custom attributes.

  7. Select Add Custom Attribute.

  8. Enter in the Custom Attribute, Attribute Type and Value.

  9. Select Add  or if you want to enter in additional custom attributes for the item, use the Create and Add Another button.

  10. Once you have added all the custom fields, Save the Item changes.

Managing Custom Attributes

You can manage custom attributes globally from the Items section of the online Square Dashboard. To view, edit and create global custom attributes:

  1. Go to the online Square Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to the item library.

  3. Select Library Properties > Custom Attributes.

Here you can view existing custom attributes along with their type. If the attribute was added and is managed by a third party integration then the name of the integration will be displayed next to the name of the attribute in parentheses.
