Filter orders on your kitchen display

  • About filtering orders

    You can filter orders by kitchen routing category or by dining option. Filtering orders by kitchen routing category on your Square KDS app helps you route items and orders to specified Square KDS screens, increasing your team’s efficiency to prep orders faster with the relevant order information available for each kitchen station.

    Filtering by dining option allows kitchen staff to route tickets or items to specific KDS screens based on dining options entered from POS orders, such as Dine-In or To-Go orders. Here are some examples of how routing by dining option can be used:

    • Filter to only “Pickup” & “To-Go” orders at a station focused on packaging to-go orders.

    • Filter to only ‘Pickup’ & ‘Delivery’ orders at a station that manages order retrievals by delivery couriers.

    • Filter to only ‘Dine-In’ orders at a station that focuses on in-house meals only.

    Before you begin

    • Download the Square KDS app on an Android tablet. Square KDS is only available on Android tablets.

    • Make sure you’ve created at least one kitchen display device code. Learn how to set up device codes.

    • You can create and turn on kitchen routing categories from your Square Dashboard. You can choose which categories to route from your Square Dashboard and Square KDS app.

    • Square KDS dining options only apply to orders originating from a point of sale and do not apply to online orders even if they are the same name like Pickup or Delivery.

    • Before you can filter dining options, you need to enable dining options. Learn how to create and manage dining options.

    Create kitchen routing categories

    You can set up kitchen routing categories to send your menu items to different Square KDS screens. These categories will not affect your menu or reporting settings.

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Device management > Kitchen settings > Kitchen routing.

    2. Toggle ON Use kitchen routing categories on KDS.

    3. Click Create new categories and give a name to your new category.

    4. Click Save and assign items.

    5. Assign items to the category, then click Done.

    You can select which kitchen routing categories you want to route to your Square KDS app screens.

    Square Dashboard

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Device management > Devices.
    2. Select your device then, next to Assigned modes, click Manage.
    3. Click Items & categories, then toggle ON the categories you want to route to the Square KDS screen.
    4. Click Save.

    1. Open your Square KDS app and tap Settings > Items & categories.
    2. Toggle ON the categories you want to route to the Square KDS screen.

    Filter dining options on your kitchen display

    1. Open your Square KDS and tap Settings > Routing > Source & Fulfillment.

    2. Scroll down to Dining Options.

    3. Pick which dining option you want to turn on from the list.

    If a dining option isn’t showing up, ensure that the dining option is enabled for that location in Square Dashboard.
