How do I order a new magstripe reader?

You can order a new, free reader directly from your online Square Dashboard. If you need multiple readers, contact us here with information on how many readers you need and how you plan to use them.

Can I use my magstripe reader with any Square account?

Yes, the reader is universal. It doesn’t store any specific account or bank account information, and it can be used to accept payments from multiple Square accounts.

I bought a reader for $10. How do I receive my credit?

If you bought your reader at a participating retail store, enter the redemption code printed on the inside of the reader packaging.

Is my mobile device compatible with the magstripe reader?

Most devices running the latest version of Apple iOS or Android OS are supported as long as they also have a 3.5mm headphone jack and location services. Check if your device is compatible.

Can I use an extension cable or audio jack adaptor with my magstripe reader?

We don’t officially support audio jack adaptors or extension cables, but our merchants recommend a few that work well.

Can I buy a magstripe reader today?

Yes, find a retail location near you.

Can I accept chip cards or contactless (NFC) payments?

The Magstripe Reader processes magnetic stripe cards only, but you can use the Square Chip Card Reader or the Contactless and Chip Card Reader to accept chip cards.

My device doesn’t have a headphone jack, how can plug my reader in?

If your device does not have a headphone jack, you can the the Lightning Adapter for Square Reader. The adapter plugs into the Lightning port on your iPhone and provides a rigid connection with your reader for processing payments more easily.
