Create and assign device profiles

  • About device profiles

    A device profile is a collection of settings used to configure one or more devices with preset settings, restrictions, and add-ons.

    Device profiles allow you to save and reuse custom settings on devices across multiple locations and/or multiple devices in a single location. For example, if you use multiple POS devices in a cafe, you can set up a device profile so all devices have tipping enabled.

    Device profiles are part of Square’s Remote Device Management suite of features. With Remote Device Management, you can create a device profile, customize the settings, and assign them to your device(s) to automatically apply the settings.

    Before you begin

    You can create and edit device profiles from your Square Dashboard. You can also customize the Checkout, Security, and Add-on settings on device profiles from your Square Dashboard or the Square POS apps.

    You have two options for assigning device profiles to your devices:

    • Assign a device profile to multiple devices in Square Dashboard

    • Assign a device profile to a device in a Square POS app

    While setting up a device code is not a requirement for using device profiles, it is beneficial to use both features together, especially if you need to manage multiple devices for your business. Learn how to Set up device codes.

    Step 1: Create a device profile

    You can create a device profile from your Square Dashboard:

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.

    2. Click Create.

    3. Select the application you want to use for the device profile and click Next.

    4. If applicable, select a template and click Next.

    5. Enter the device profile name.

    6. Click Save to view your new device profile.

    7. Move on to step two to customize the device profile settings or click Save to keep the default settings.

    Step 2: Customize device profile settings

    You can customize device profile settings from your Square Dashboard or in the Square POS apps. Changes you make to the settings automatically update on your device after a transaction completes or when you open and close the app.

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select a device profile and click Manage under Settings.
    3. Click Checkout, Settings, and Add-ons.
    4. Set your preferences and click Save when you’re done.

    Customize device profile settings from the Square POS apps

    1. Open the Square POS app on your device.
    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Checkout or Security.
    3. View the banner to see the device profile assigned to the device.
    4. Set your Checkout and Security settings.

    The settings update on every device with the device profile assigned to it.

    Step 3: Assign a device profile

    You can assign a device profile to your Square devices from your Square Dashboard. You can also assign device profile settings to an existing device profile or change a previously assigned device profile in the Square POS apps.

    Assign a device profile from your Square Dashboard

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select a device profile and click Edit next to Assigned devices.
    3. Check the device(s) you want to assign the device profile to and click Save.

    1. Open the Square POS app on your device.
    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings.
    3. Tap Assign to a profile and select an existing device profile.
    4. Tap Save.

    Change a previously assigned device profile from the Square POS apps

    1. Open the Square POS app on your device.
    2. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Checkout or Security.
    3. Tap Change profile.
    4. Select a device profile and tap Save. You can also tap Unassigned settings to remove the device profile without assigning a new profile.

    Step 4: Edit a device profile

    You can rename, duplicate, or delete device profiles from your Square Dashboard.

    Rename a device profile

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select an existing device profile.
    3. Click Edit and enter the new device profile name.
    4. Click Save.

    Duplicate a device profile

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select an existing device profile.
    3. Click the three dots (•••) > Duplicate profile.
    4. Enter the device profile name and click Save.

    Delete a device profile

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Profiles > Device profiles.
    2. Select an existing device profile.
    3. Click the three dots (•••) > Delete profile.
    4. Click Delete to confirm.
