Create email marketing campaigns

Who is this article for?
  • Sellers with the marketing permission to create, edit and send email marketing campaigns to subcribed customers. Set permissions in Square Dashboard.
  • Square Marketing subscribers.
  • About email marketing campaigns

With Square Marketing, you can easily create email marketing campaigns by designing and targeting customised email and social media promotions. Use the intuitive tools and access the searchable image gallery to optimise your campaign reach and engagement — making it simple to connect with your subscribed customers.

Email addresses that you have previously collected through Square which are included in your Customer Directory (for example, a customer has provided you with their email to receive an invoice, book an appointment or receive loyalty rewards) cannot be used to send email marketing through Square Marketing unless you have separately collected and recorded the customer's explicit consent or manually added that customer as a "subscribed customer" in your customer directory.

    Before you begin

    • You can create email marketing campaigns in Square Dashboard.

    • To send a campaign about a loyalty promotion, make sure you’re subscribed to Square Loyalty and have a program set up. Learn how to create a loyalty program.

    • If your business has multiple locations, you have the option to select one specific location if it isn’t relevant for all locations. This will determine which address shows up at the bottom of emails and limit where vouchers can be redeemed.

    • You can choose to target your subscribed customers with different smart groups. Smart groups are recommended customer groups, such as top spenders, frequent visitors, active customers and loyal subscribers.

Reminder emails can't be disabled once the campaign has been sent.

    Square Email Marketing pricing

Square Email Marketing comes with a free 30-day trial. After the trial, monthly pricing is based on the number of subscribed customers you have in your Customer Directory. For example, if your Customer Directory contains 35,279 customers, but you've only collected explicit consent to email 1,500 customers, the subscription fee is $50 per month, per Square account.

    Pricing for subscribed contacts:

    • 0 - 500: $20 per month

    • 501 - 1,000: $35 per month

    • 1,001 - 2,000: $50 per month

    • 2,001 - 4,000: $60 per month

    • 4,001 - 9,000: $100 per month

    • 9,001 - 15,000: $170 per month

    • 15,001 - 30,000: $270 per month

    Create an email marketing campaign

Once you've received consent to email your customers, you can send a one-time email campaign or set up an ongoing automated campaign. To do so:

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Customers > Marketing > Campaigns.

    2. Click Create campaign and choose Email.

    3. Click Next, and choose your campaign location and objective. Campaign objectives include rewarding customers, offering vouchers, sending quick updates, promoting your online store and more.

    4. Click Design, and either select a pre-existing template or use the default template to customise your campaign. Choose your default campaign colour, layout, font and button size, email header and more. You can also add images, new text fields, and items from your library, as well as re-order these blocks of content so the email matches exactly what you’re looking for.

    5. Click Select audience, and either choose All customers or select a Custom set of customers. If you chose a smart group when selecting your campaign objective, you can adjust the group recipients by clicking Modify.

    6. Click Review Campaign to review campaign details and make any additional adjustments.

    7. Click Schedule or Send now.

    Enable email reminders

When creating a one-time blast campaign with Square Marketing, the option to send a reminder email to recipients who haven’t opened your message is disabled by default. If you want to send reminder emails, this setting can be switched on from the Review & Send step of the campaign creation process.

Once you've sent an email marketing campaign with reminders enabled, reminder emails are sent five days after the original delivery date. Campaigns with vouchers or discounts are sent again to those who haven’t opened your message seven days before the voucher is set to expire. By default, a voucher expires two months after the campaign is sent, unless you’ve set it to expire on a different date.

    Cancel a marketing campaign

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Customers > Marketing > Campaigns.

    2. Select the scheduled campaign you’d like to cancel and click Cancel.

    3. If applicable, select whether you’d like to still honour any unredeemed vouchers, or cancel and invalidate them.

    4. Click Cancel campaign.
