Transfer orders with Square for Retail

    If you need to transfer stock from one location to another, you can transfer items in bulk with transfer orders from your Square Dashboard. Each transfer order can be viewed in your Transfer orders page or in your History log. To filter your History log to only view item transfers, click All adjustment types > deselect all filters other than Transferred

    Before you begin

    Transfer orders can only be created through the Square Dashboard. You must have at least two locations created in order to transfer stock. Items must be marked as available in both locations in order to transfer. Location availability can be assigned when creating an item from your Item Library, or using the item import tool

    Create a transfer order 

    To create a new transfer order:

    1. From your Square Dashboard, navigate to Inventory management > Transfer orders > Create.

    2. Enter order details, such as: source location and destination location, expected transfer date and tracking number. 

    3. You can search for items by typing the item name or SKU in the search box.
      Note: The list only shows items that are available at the origin location

    4. Click Save draft to save and return to the transfer order later, or Create order when you’re done.

    Manage transfer orders

    Transfer orders can only be edited on Square Dashboard, but can be received via your Square Dashboard, the Square POS app with retail mode enabled or from the Square Retail POS app. To filter your History log to only view item transfers, click All Adjustment Types and deselect all filters other than Transferred.

    Edit a transfer order

    To edit a transfer order:

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Items > Inventory management > Transfer orders.
    2. Click the transfer order you want to edit, then click Edit.
    3. Once all your edits are complete, click Save.

    You cannot edit the amount of an item being transferred to be less than the amount of items that has already been received at the transfer order destination.

    Receive a transfer order

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Items > Inventory management > Transfer orders.
    2. Click the transfer order you want to receive, then click Receive items.
    3. Adjust item quantities received if needed.
    4. Click Confirm.

    To receive a transfer order from your point of sale app:

    1. Open the app and tap Inventory > Transfer orders.
    2. Tap the transfer order you want to receive, then tap Receive items.
    3. Adjust item quantities received if needed.
    4. Tap Confirm.

    Instantly transfer items

    You can transfer your stock instantly rather than having to mark it as received at your destination location by:

    1. From your Square Dashboard, navigate to Inventory management > Transfer orders > Create.

    2. Enter order details, such as: source location and destination location, expected transfer date and tracking number. 

    3. Click the ••• button > Transfer instantly.

    4. Click Transfer.

    Transferring items instantly is only available via the Square Dashboard.
