  • About redeeming Local Cash rewards

With Neighborhoods on Cash App, your customers can use their Local Cash balance to pay for purchases at your business. When customers check in by scanning a QR code on your buyer-facing display, their Local Cash automatically applies to their order—no additional hardware required.

Local Cash can be used to pay for some or all of your customer’s transaction. Customers can then pay any remaining balance with another payment method, earn more Local Cash on eligible purchases, and view their complete transaction history in Cash App.

    Before you begin

    • You can redeem Local Cash rewards from the Square Point of Sale app, Square Restaurants POS app, and Square Register.

    • You can view Local Cash transactions from Square Dashboard.

    • Make sure you’re enrolled in Neighborhoods. Learn how to join Neighborhoods on Cash App.

    • Details about your customer experience:

      • Checking in: Local Cash is automatically applied when the customer checks in at your POS.

      • Full Local Cash application: Customers must apply 100% of their available Local Cash to the transaction at this time. They cannot choose to apply a partial amount.

      • Additional payments: If the Local Cash balance doesn't cover the full purchase amount, you'll need to collect the remaining balance using another payment method (card, cash, etc.).

      • Split payments: If the customer is splitting a payment with someone else, only one person can redeem their Local Cash. If the Local Cash is redeemed in the first transaction, then the remaining split amount will be equally divided.

      • Check-in removal: You can remove a customer's check-in from your POS before completing the transaction, which will also remove any Local Cash being applied.

    Accept Local Cash payments

Step 1: Display check-in QR code

    1. Before adding items to the cart, customers will see a button to check in on your buyer-facing display.
    2. When the customer taps the button, a QR code will appear on the screen.
    3. Customers can check in using the QR code and apply their Local Cash to their purchase.
      • For enrolled customers, scanning the QR code will check them in and automatically apply their Local Cash to the order.
      • For unenrolled customers, scanning the QR code will start the enrollment process, then check them in.

Step 2: Customer checks in with Cash App

    1. The customer opens Cash App on their phone.
    2. In the Neighborhoods tab, they tap the redeem button next to their Local Cash balance.
    3. Cash App launches the in-app camera with instructions, and the customer scans the QR code displayed on your buyer-facing display.
    4. Cash App shows the total Local Cash amount that will be applied to the order.

Step 3: Add items to cart

    1. Add items to the cart.
    2. The buyer-facing display will show the Local Cash being used for redemption.
    3. Continue adding items until the order is complete.

You can remove the customer’s check-in at any time during this process.

    Step 4: Process the payment

If Local Cash covers the full amount:

    1. Tap Charge in the cart to process the transaction automatically using the customer’s Local Cash. The customer won’t be able to tip since Local Cash covered the full amount and no other payment method was used.
    2. Cash App will show the Neighborhoods tab with the transaction details to the customer.
    3. The customer can select their receipt preference (email, text, or printed).
    4. The transaction is complete.

If Local Cash doesn’t cover the full amount:

    1. Tap Charge in the cart.
    2. The Local Cash amount is applied first.
    3. You’ll be prompted to collect the remaining balance. The customer can:
      • Tap their card on the buyer-facing display.
      • Pay with another method (cash, different card, etc.).
    4. The customer can add a tip.
    5. The customer can select their receipt preference (email, text, or printed).
    6. The transaction is complete.

Step 5: Customer earns Local Cash

After the transaction is complete, customers may earn Local Cash on their purchase. The customer will see their updated Local Cash balance in Cash App.

    Remove a customer check-in

You can remove a customer's check-in from your POS at any time before charging. This will remove any Local Cash being applied to the order. The check-in will also be removed from the customer's Cash App.

    1. On the seller-facing display, have your sale screen open with the customer displayed.

    2. Tap ••• > Clear check-in.

    View Local Cash transactions

Local Cash payments appear in your transaction history with "Local Cash used" shown as part of the overall transaction.

    1. Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Payments & orders (or Payments & invoices or Payments) > Transactions.

    2. Select a transaction that includes Local Cash as a payment method. For transactions where an additional payment method was used, you'll see both the Local Cash amount and the additional payment method used.
