Set up tax overrides for Square Online and Online Ordering
About tax overrides
Tax overrides let you apply a custom tax rate to online orders based on country, state, or ZIP code — replacing the default tax rate for specific jurisdictions.
Tax override settings are managed natively in your Square Dashboard. If you previously configured tax overrides through Weebly, those settings have been automatically migrated to the new interface. Review your rates to make sure everything transferred correctly.
Before you begin
You can set up tax overrides from your Square Dashboard. You need the Account & Settings permission to Manage sales tax configuration (Staff > Team > Permissions > Account & Settings > Business).
You need to already have your base tax settings configured. Learn how to create and manage sales tax settings.
If you previously used Weebly tax overrides, your settings have been automatically migrated. Review your rates to confirm they transferred correctly.
Set up a tax override
- Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes.
- Under the online order type you want to configure (delivery, pickup, shipping, or non-physical), select Manage settings.
- Select Manage manual tax rates.
- Select the country where you want to add a tax override.
- Select Create new state tax rate.
- Enter a name for the rate (e.g., “Washington state tax”).
- Set the tax percentage.
- Select Save.
:
To add a ZIP code rate under a state:
:
- Select Add under the state rate you want to add a local override to.
- Enter the ZIP code.
- Set the tax percentage.
- Select Add.
- Select Save.
- Select Done to close the modal.
Note: Country rates default to 0%. You can choose whether ZIP code rates are applied in addition to or instead of the state rate. You can add multiple ZIP codes per state. If a ZIP code isn't valid for the selected state, the override won't apply. Overrides take effect immediately for new online orders.
Tax overrides are configured per online order type (delivery, pickup, shipping, or non-physical). Select which order type to apply manual taxes to from the Sales Taxes settings page before managing your override rates.
Edit or remove a tax override
- Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes.
- Under the online order type you want to configure (delivery, pickup, shipping, or non-physical), select Manage settings.
- Select Manage manual tax rates.
- Select the country, state, or ZIP code rate you want to edit.
- To update: Change the rate percentage or name.
- To remove: Select Delete.
- Select Save.
Changes take effect immediately for new online orders.
Migrate your Weebly tax overrides
If you previously had tax overrides configured through Weebly, those settings have been automatically migrated to your Square Dashboard. If you didn't have custom Weebly overrides, no action is needed — your default tax rate continues to apply.
To verify your migrated rates:
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes.
Under each online order type, select Manage settings, then select Manage manual tax rates.
Confirm your migrated rates match the rates you had in Weebly.
Place a test order to confirm the correct tax rate is applied.
FAQ
Why did my tax rates change on online orders?
Square migrated tax override settings to the native Square platform. Your previous Weebly overrides have been automatically copied to your Dashboard. Review your rates under Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes to confirm they transferred correctly.
Can I get my old Weebly settings back?
Your legacy Weebly tax overrides have been automatically migrated to your Square Dashboard. Go to Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes to review and edit your rates.
What if I don't verify my overrides?
Your migrated rates are already active, but it's important to confirm they transferred correctly. If a rate is missing or incorrect, update it under Account & Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes
Can I defer this change?
Yes — defer the entire Bundle 3 release through the notification you received. This delays all Bundle 3 features, not just tax overrides.
