Connect Recommended Hardware to Square Terminal

Square Terminal makes it easy to connect compatible hardware accessories, just plug them in and you are good to go! To start, be sure your Square Terminal is connected to the hub, plugged into a socket and powered on.

To connect accessories to your Square Terminal, you’ll need to purchase a Hub for Square Terminal.

To ensure that you are using supported accessories, check out our complete hardware compatibility list. Note: Square Terminal has a built-in printer. If you are looking for a printer-driven cash drawer to pair with your Square Terminal, an additional external printer is necessary for compatibility.

Connect Hardware to Square Terminal

  1. Ensure that your Square Terminal is connected to the hub, power adaptor, and power adaptor cable.

  2. When a piece of hardware is properly connected, Square Terminal will confirm with an on-screen notification as well as with an audio indication.

  1. Tap ≡ More from the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen.

  2. Tap Settings.

Troubleshoot the USB Barcode Scanner:

In case you’re having trouble connecting your USB scanner, give the following troubleshooting steps a try:

  1. Make sure your Square Terminal is plugged into the USB hardware hub, power adapter and power adapter cable and ensure that the power adapter is plugged into a power socket.

  2. Clear the hardware hub USB ports of any debris or dust.

  3. Plug the USB scanner into a different port on the hardware hub.

  4. Refer to the Quick Start Guide included in the packaging of your USB scanner. Select the quick guide specific to your USB scanner.

If you’re having issues with your USB scanner and aren’t receiving any error messages, you’ll want to try restoring the factory settings.

For the Zebra scanner:

  1. From page 3 of the Quick Start Guide, scan the barcode labelled Set Factory Defaults while the scanner is plugged into the USB hardware hub.

  2. Unplug the USB scanner and plug it back into the hardware hub.

If you connect your USB scanner and receive an error message that states ‘USB DEVICE IS NOT COMPATIBLE’, you’ll need to reset your scanner. To do so:

  1. From page 4 of the Quick Start Guide, scan the barcode labelled USB Keyboard HID while the scanner is plugged into the USB hardware hub.

  2. Unplug the USB scanner and plug it back into the hardware hub.

If you do not have the Quick Start Guide that was included in the original scanner packaging, print a copy from a compatible device. You are unable to scan the included barcodes from a monitor or screen. If you continue to experience issues with your hardware, you can contact Zebra on 1-800-653-5350.
