Important changes to your Square Online coupons

Who is this article for?
This article is for sellers who want to understand what's changing with Square Online coupons and how to navigate to different features after the changes.

About the changes to your Square Online coupons

Beginning August 2024, you will manage your coupons from one central location—Square Marketing—for use across your Square Online site and Square Marketing campaigns.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • New coupons: Any new coupons need to be created in Square Marketing, not your Square Online dashboard.

  • Existing coupons: For coupons created in Square Online, most coupon types will be automatically migrated to Square Marketing.

  • Coupon changes: Some coupons will work differently after the migration. Other coupons will no longer be supported and need to be updated before they can migrate.

Before you begin

Be sure to review any emails you've received from Square about these changes to see how they apply to your account and the date they take effect.

Coupon status

Each of your Square Online coupons will be given a status based on how similarly it will function in Square Marketing. Once the migration is complete, we will notify you in Square Online which of your coupons need attention.

Successful

Fully supported in Square Marketing. These coupons will be automatically migrated with no action required.

Updated

Supported in Square Marketing and will be migrated but will work differently.

Fail

Not supported in Square Marketing. These coupons need to be updated for them to be migrated.

Coupon expired

Coupons that are inactive will not be migrated.

Coupon exists

This coupon code is active in both Square Online and Square Marketing. The Square Online coupon will not be migrated and only the Square Marketing coupon is applied at checkout.

If any of your coupons have the Fail status, you need to update them to ensure the coupon code will continue to work after Square Online Coupons are deactivated. If any of your coupons have the Updated status, make sure your coupon marketing reflects any new coupon features or limitations. If none of your active coupons are impacted, no action is needed.

Changes to Square Online coupon features

You have until October 9, 2024 to update any unsupported coupons or review any feature changes before the migration is complete.

Free shipping and free delivery coupons

Free shipping and free delivery coupons can no longer be applied to specific items or categories. These coupons now apply to the entire sale including limits to sales over a certain amount.

To update these coupons before the migration, change the discount to either All orders or Orders over a certain amount.

To update these coupons after the migration:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Coupons or Shared Settings > Coupons.
  2. Follow the prompts to change the discount to either All orders or Orders over a certain amount, and migrate your coupons to Square Marketing.

Free shipping coupons

Free shipping coupons can no longer be applied to a specific shipping method. These coupons now apply to any available shipping method and cannot be limited to specific shipping methods.

To update these coupons before the migration, use Square Marketing to build a new free shipping coupon with the same coupon code.

To update these coupons after the migration:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Coupons or Shared Settings > Coupons.
  2. Follow the prompts to remove shipping method limits and migrate your coupons to Square Marketing.

Item-specific coupons

Item-specific coupons now apply once per order to the most expensive eligible item instead of being applied to each unit of each eligible item in the order. No action is required to migrate this coupon type.

Category-specific coupons

Category-specific coupons now apply once per order to the most expensive eligible item instead of being applied to each unit of each eligible item in the order.

If you have existing Square Online category coupons, your Square Online categories will be migrated to Square Item Library at the same time your coupons are migrated. Your migrated coupons will continue to work using your migrated categories.

No action is required to migrate this coupon type.

Coupon codes with special characters

Coupons codes can no longer include certain special characters, such as letters from alphabets not supported by Square. To update these coupons after the migration:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Coupons or Shared Settings > Coupons.
  2. Follow the prompts to remove unsupported characters from the coupon code and migrate your coupons to Square Marketing.

Percent-off coupons with decimal percentages

Percent-off coupons can no longer include a decimal in the discount percentage. To update these coupons after the migration:

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Coupons or Shared Settings > Coupons.
  2. Follow the prompts to change the percentage discounts to whole numbers and migrate your coupons to Square Marketing.

Coupons with redemption limits

For coupons with limits on the number of redemptions, either per customer or overall, the current redemption count will reset to zero. No action is required to migrate this coupon type.

Coupons that have already reached their overall redemption limit are considered inactive and won’t be migrated to Square Marketing.
