Manage automatic receipts for Square customers

About automatic receipts

When you use a payment card for the first time with a Square seller, you’re asked during checkout to enter your email address or phone number to receive digital receipts via email or text message for future purchases made with this card.

Your email address or phone number is attached to your payment card. If you provide your email address, you’re automatically sent receipts to this address when you make subsequent purchases with that card with Square sellers without having to enter in your email address each time. If you provide your phone number, you still need to manually choose to receive a receipt via text after each payment.

Before you begin

Square doesn’t share your contact information with sellers to whom you haven’t directly given your information. When receiving automated receipts after making a purchase, your contact details are not visible to them. When a printed receipt is available, a hidden email address might be shown on the checkout screen.

Manage automatic receipts

Resubscribe to automatic receipts

If you’ve unsubscribed from automatic receipts, you can resubscribe by selecting Manage Preferences at the bottom of any digital receipt. You can resubscribe to automatic receipts from a specific seller or a list of all sellers.

Unsubscribe from automatic receipts

You can unsubscribe from automatic receipts by selecting Turn off automatic receipts from the bottom of your digital emailed receipt. You can also unsubscribe or make any additional changes from your Square Profile. To do so:

  1. Select Manage Preferences at the bottom of any digital emailed receipt.
  2. From Email Preferences toggle off Receive automatic receipts to unsubscribe from all Square receipts.
  3. To unsubscribe from a specific Square business’ receipts, go to Businesses visited and toggle off receipts for individual business.

Unlink an email address

  1. Select Not Your Receipt? at the bottom of your digital receipt.
  2. From Card Preferences, select Unlink next to your email address.

Update your phone number

If you provide a phone number to receive an SMS receipt from a Square Seller, this information is pre-populated but redacted (--1234) on the receipt screen for you to confirm during future purchases from Square sellers. You can edit the pre-populated phone number at the point of sale by tapping the field and entering updated information.

Manage receipts received in error

There are several reasons your email or phone number may have been mistakenly connected with a purchase you didn’t make:

  • If an individual who isn’t the owner of the card, such as a spouse or friend, borrowed your card and provided their own email at the time of purchase.
  • If a customer makes an error typing their email at the time of purchase.
  • If a seller accidentally enters an email address that isn’t the customer’s.
  • If an individual makes a purchase on behalf of someone else and enters the other person’s email address as the destination of a receipt.

If your email address or phone number for a receipt was entered incorrectly or is no longer used, contact us. We can unlink this information from your payment card so you can enter the correct contact information to receive your receipts next time you visit a Square seller.
