Automatic Receipts

Note Square doesn’t share your contact information with sellers to whom you haven’t directly given your information. Even when you are receiving automated receipts after making a purchase at a Square Seller, your contact details are not visible to them. When a printed receipt is available, we may show an obfuscated email (e.g., e*****@gmail.com) on the checkout screen.

What is an Automatic Receipt?

When you use a payment card for the first time with a Square Seller, you are asked on the point of sale device to enter your email address or phone number to receive digital receipts for future purchases made with this card via email or text message.

At this point, the email address or phone number is attached to that payment card. If you provided your email address, you will automatically be sent receipts to this address when you make subsequent purchases with that card at Square Sellers without having to enter in your email address each time. However, if you provided your phone number, you will still need to manually choose to receive a receipt via text after each payment with a Square Seller.

## How can I unsubscribe from Automatic Receipts? You can unsubscribe from automatic receipts from the footer of any emailed receipt you received from Square. To do so: 1. Click **Manage Preferences** at the very bottom of the receipt. 2. Select **Unsubscribe** to stop receiving automatic receipts from this Square Seller, or **Cancel** to manage preferences for all Square Sellers. 3. Select **Don't automatically send me any digital receipts**. **Note**: **Don't automatically send me any digital receipts** means you'd like to stop receiving automatic email receipts for purchases from all sellers using Square. When visiting any Square seller in the future, you will be asked if you would like to receive your receipt via text message or email for each purchase. You can enter your phone or email address to receive a one-time receipt from that seller. You will not be re-enrolled to receive automatic receipts from any seller using Square unless you adjust your preferences. You have the option to resubscribe to automatic receipts for purchases from a specific seller or all sellers. ## How can I change my phone number for text receipts? {#edit-phone-number} If you provide a phone number to receive an SMS receipt from a Square Seller, this information will be pre-populated (but redacted, e.g., *** *** 1234) on the receipt screen for you to confirm during future purchases from Square Sellers. You can edit the pre-populated phone number at the point of sale by tapping the field and entering new information. ## What if I received a receipt that wasn’t meant for me? If you'd like to unlink an email address from a payment card for automatic email receipts, you can click **Not Your Receipt?** at the bottom of your Square receipt or [contact us](https://squareup.com/help/contact?prefill=incorrect_receipt). ## Why am I receiving a receipt not meant for me? There are several ways that your email or phone number may have been mistakenly connected with a purchase you didn’t make: If you share a credit card with other people in your family. If an individual who isn’t the owner of the card (e.g., a spouse or friend) borrowed the credit card and entered their own email at the time of purchase. If a customer makes an error typing their email in at the time of purchase. If a seller accidentally enters an email address that isn’t the customer’s. If an individual made a purchase on behalf of someone else and enters the other person’s email address as the destination of a receipt, etc. **Note**: If your email address or phone number for receipt delivery was entered with a mistake, [let us know](https://squareup.com/help/contact?prefill=unlink_email_from_payment_card) and we can unlink this information from your payment card so you can enter the correct contact information to receive your receipts next time you visit a Square seller. ### How can customers unsubscribe from Square Seller’s receipts? **Note** Square doesn’t share your contact information with sellers you have not directly given it to. This happens when you first type in your email address for a receipt; only that seller has access to your full email address. You may receive an automatic receipt from a Square seller. This is a convenience feature that Square provides when you are making purchases from Square sellers. You should note that unless you provide your email address directly to a seller, they cannot see your email address. Square does this to protect individuals’ privacy. You can unsubscribe from automatic receipts at any time by clicking the link at the bottom of any Square Receipt. You can unsubscribe from receiving automatic email receipts from Square Sellers directly from your email: 1. From the bottom of your emailed receipt, click **Manage Preferences**. 2. Select **Don’t automatically send me any digital receipts**. **Note**: Even if you’ve unsubscribed from automatic receipts, after the transaction either you or the seller can choose to email a receipt for that transaction.
