Receive Deposits with Square for Retail

In order to receive deposits with Square for Retail, you’ll need to complete the sign-up process, verify your identity, and link a supported bank account.

Information Required to Sign Up

Federal law requires that all financial institutions verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account.

The following information is required to activate a Square account:

  • Full legal name

  • Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification number (ITIN)

  • US-based bank account

  • Date of birth: Current credit card regulations require our customers to be 18 years of age or older to create a Square account.

  • US home mailing address

If you’re unable to provide the information above, you won’t be able to accept card payments, but you can still use Square to track cash payments and provide your customers with email and text receipts.

The following information is optional when activating a Square account – not required, but recommended for businesses and organizations:

  • Employer Identification Number (EIN): The option to enter an EIN does not replace the SSN or ITIN requirement. Adding an EIN helps us identify you as a business and is advantageous when it comes to completing your taxes.

  • Business bank account

Square’s card processing system meets Level 1 PCI Data Security Standards, so Square’s got you covered.

Social Security Number Requirement

We are required by banking industry regulations and federal law to ask for the Social Security number, date of birth, and full name for each of our primary account holders. The only alternative to providing a SSN is a valid ITIN. There is no way to create a Square account without this information.

Even if you plan on using Square as a business or organization, in order to create a Square account you must provide your individual name, mailing address, date of birth, and a valid SSN or ITIN.

Note: If you’ve been added as an employee, you will not need to provide this information.

Link Your Bank Account

Once you’ve verified your identity, you can link your bank account online:

  1. Visit Account & Settings > Business information > Bank Accounts in your online Square Dashboardand click Add external bank account.

  2. Enter the requested bank account information. You can find this information listed at the bottom of your checks, or you can contact your bank to confirm this information.Routing # and account # on a check

  3. Click Verify.

From this page, you can link multiple external bank accounts to easily update where your deposits are transferred across your locations by clicking Add external bank account. From here, enter your bank account details and complete the bank verification process. Keep in mind that you can only link one bank account per location at this time.

Deposit Options

Next Business Day Overview

When you activate your Square account, by default your deposit option will be Next Business Day. With this schedule, your funds are usually deposited within one to two business days of a transaction. Regardless of your transaction amounts, types or frequency, deposits are initiated Monday through Thursday evening for payments taken Monday through Thursday and will arrive in your linked bank account in one to two business days. Payments taken on Friday will be sent Sunday night and will arrive in your bank account on Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a bank holiday).

The only thing you have to do is link a supported bank account for your money to be sent to.

Our Next Business Day schedule article has all of the information you will need to review daily deposit times, and learn how to set your close of day.

Instant Deposits

The quickest way to get your money is to take advantage of Square’s Instant Deposits.

Sometimes you need your money immediately – that’s when Instant Deposit can help. If available on your account, you can instantly send funds to your linked bank account using a debit card 24 hours a day, 7 days week, for a fee of 1% of the deposit total.

While Instant Deposits are easy to send to your bank account you will need a few things before you can get started:

  • Link a bank account and a supported U.S.-issued Visa or MasterCard debit card to your Square account.

  • Make sure you have at least $25, after processing fees, in your Square Balance.

Once you’ve set your account up for instant deposits, you can start receiving your money immediately!

We have more information on how to send your first instant deposit.

Same-Day Deposit

Same-Day Deposit has the speed of Instant Deposits, without the hassle. If you routinely need your funds faster than one to two business days, Same-Day Deposit may be available to automatically deposit your funds at your close of day. Using a debit card, funds are sent to your linked bank account for a fee of 1% of the deposit total.

Your funds will routinely be sent to your linked debit card 15 minutes after your close of day, every day.

To use Same-Day Deposit, you must have a minimum balance of $1 after Square’s fees. You can send payments as large as $10,000. If your daily balance exceeds $10,000, you’ll receive multiple deposits from Square. There is one exception: Individual payments greater than $10,000 won’t be sent via Same-Day Deposit or Instant Deposit. When this occurs, these payments will be sent via Next Business Day deposit and will be available within one to two business days to your linked bank account.

Because Same-Day Deposit works just like Instant Deposits, any funds which do not qualify will be sent on our Next Day Deposit Schedule.

Note: New sellers will be limited to one Same-Day Deposit up to $10,000 per day. As you run and grow your business with Square, a higher daily deposit amount may become available.

After you link your bank account, you can start processing card payments, and receive deposits with your Square for Retail account.
