Set your Treasury Tipped Occupation Code for Form 1099-K

Who is this article for?
  • US individual and sole-proprietor sellers who receive tips on card payments and file a Form 1099-K.
  • About the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code

Starting with the 2026 Form 1099-K, Square reports the tips you collected on card payments in Box 1c and the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code (TTOC) you select in Box 1d. The TTOC describes the kind of tipped work you do, using the IRS list of tipped occupations. If you select Does not apply, or leave the TTOC unset, Square reports code 000. Tips reported with code 000 are not counted as qualified tips

Square reports these amounts, but Square does not determine whether you qualify for the federal No Tax on Tips deduction. Whether a tip qualifies depends on your tax situation. Consult a tax professional for advice about your eligibility.

Note that mandatory service charges are not tips. They are not reported as tips in Box 1c, even when they are shared with you.

    Before you begin

You need Account & Settings permissions for your Square account to view and change the TTOC.

Set or change your Treasury Tipped Occupation Code

    1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and select Account & Settings > Tax forms.

    2. Under Treasury Tipped Occupation Code, click Select. If you've already chosen an occupation, click Edit.

    3. Open Tipped occupation and choose the occupation you receive tips for, or choose 000· Does not apply. Your selection applies to all of your locations.

    4. Click Save.

You can change your selection through December 31. On December 31, the selection is locked for the tax year. After that date, any change uses a correction process rather than this setting.
