To make an Iowa state income tax payment, you must be registered with the Iowa Department of Revenue (DOR), and every employer or other person who is required to withhold Iowa income tax must register as a withholding agent. There is no fee for registering. You can apply for your Iowa permit online.

Iowa will use the Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) and the business owner’s Social Security Number. If you don’t have an FEIN, you can apply for one online with the IRS.

There are three options to file a income tax payment:

  • Pay by Direct Debit: This option is a tax payment electronically withdrawn from your bank account* through the tax software used to electronically file individual income or corporation income tax returns, the eFile & Pay system. You will need to enter your bank routing number and your bank account number.

Note: You receive credit for making the payment on the date you indicate the Department should withdraw it from your bank account. This may be the date you send it, or a date in the future if you request the payment to be warehoused for withdrawal at a later date. Please allow 1 week after the withdrawal date for your bank to post it to your account.

  • Pay by Credit/Debit card: The Iowa Department of Revenue has retained Official Payments Corporation to offer individuals and businesses the opportunity to pay certain taxes and fees by credit or debit card over the Internet or by telephone. This service is safe, reliable, and in accordance with all state and government regulations.

Note: When paying by credit card, the Official Payments charges a 2.45% convenience fee for each payment transaction, with a minimum fee of $3.95. This fee will be charged to the card being used.

  • Pay by Epay / ACH Direct Debit: To use the ePay option: even if you already have a BEN, do not enter the BEN. Instead, choose the link at the left “Not enrolled? Click here.” You are not required to enroll, but if you do not, you must use the “not enrolled” link each time you enter the system to make an income tax payment.
