How do I adjust the brightness of the display?
To control the brightness of customer display, you can go to Settings > Customer Display from the menu at the top. You can also adjust the seller display by following the same steps but selecting Seller Display.
Can I add my own images to the customer display?
You can add up to eight custom images to be presented on the customer display when not in use. The images can be uploaded from your online Square Dashboard, then configured from your Square Register.

How do I adjust the volume of Square Register?
You can change the volume of sound from Settings > Sound.
How do I change the date and time of Square Register?
You can change the date and time from Settings > General.
How long is the customer display cable?
Your customer display cable is 40 inches long.
How do I access a web browser and other apps?
Square Register does not have a browser or support any app stores. This means that you cannot use Square Register to check emails, access search engine (e.g. Google), or browse any other websites that are not within Square’s domain. You also are not able to download third party apps on to your Square Register.
What other hardware accessories does Square Register support?
Square Register has a hub that allows up to 5 USB devices. Currently, receipt/kitchen printers, barcode scanners, keyboards, and cash drawers, are supported. Bluetooth-connected hardware accessories are not supported at this time. Please check the exact models supported by Square Register.
How should I clean my Square Register?
When cleaning the outside of your Register, first shut down your Register and unplug the power adapter. Then use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the Register’s exterior. Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not spray liquid directly on the Register. Don’t use aerosol sprays, solvents, abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide that might damage the finish.
To clean the screen on your Register, first shut down the device and unplug the power adapter. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean Register’s screen.
What are the notifications shown on the status bar?
If you tap on Notifications, you will be able to see the details of each notification. They are important messages for you to know. If there are more actions to be done, you should be able to tap on a message to get directed to an appropriate page.
How do I get rid of the notifications shown on the status bar?
Unless you perform the action requested by each message, that notification will not go away.
Software Update Questions
How often does Square Register’s software get updated?
One of the benefits of Square Register is that we keep the software up to date automatically, so you will always get the latest features and improvements with no additional cost. We will update the software every 2-4 weeks.
Note: a software update for Square Register generally requires 2 GB and there can be up to two updates per month, thus up to 3 GB per month may be needed. This does not include attempts to retry failed downloads, so it is recommended to connect to WiFi overnight to help facilitate software updates.
How do I know if my Square Register’s software is up to date?
You can go to Settings > General > About Register to check if your software version is up to date. We release software for Square Register every 2-4 weeks and Register checks for availability of update every 15 min. For more details on the latest software update, check out our Seller Community.
Software update requires network connection and power, so make sure that Square Register is connected to network via Wi-Fi/Ethernet and powered on, even when not in use. When you’re not using Square Register, you can dim the screens simply by pressing and quickly releasing the power button.
I see “Update Available” on my status bar. What should I do?
Most software updates should happen automatically every 2-4 weeks. However, sometimes, we have a critical update that should be installed more urgently. You can tap on “Update Available” and install the update right away. The process of installing an update includes a reboot and a 20-25min total downtime. During part of this downtime while your customer display is updating, you can still process card payments by keying in card numbers on Register, if necessary. If your business doesn’t allow you to update Register right away, Register will go through the normal update process overnight, provided it is plugged into power.
How can I change the time at which software update happens?
Currently, software update happens during the nightly reboot time, which is set at 3am in your timezone in order to avoid usual business hours. If your business is open during 3am, software update process will prevent you from taking payments for 10-15m while customer display software updates.
After your first update, you’ll be able to control your reboot time if 3am does not work for your business. Tap the switcher at the top of your Register and choose Settings > Device > General > About Register, you can choose to install the update sooner than 3am when it might be a more convenient time for your business.
Why is my device rebooting in the morning?
If you’ve powered down your Square Register overnight and there is a software update available, the update will be applied when you next power on your device. Updates involve a reboot of Square Register and the customer display. Updates are released approximately every 2-4 weeks. To ensure your business is not interrupted, please leave Square Register on at all times. Updates will be applied automatically overnight.
