Manage item details settings

Who is this article for?
  • Account owners or team members with the checkout permission to take payments. Set permissions in Square Dashboard.
  • Sellers with standard, services, or F&B mode enabled in the Square Point of Sale app.
  • About item details settings

    The item details screen is where you configure items at checkout—selecting variations, choosing modifiers, adjusting quantities and adding notes.

    These settings apply globally across all your devices. Per-device options are not available at this time.

    Before you begin

    • You need the Square Point of Sale app on iOS or Android, Square Register, Square Terminal or Square Handheld.

    • Your device must be running the latest version of the Square Point of Sale app.

    • Item details settings are available for Standard, Services and F&B modes. If you use retail mode, these settings are not yet available.

    Manage item details settings

    1. From the Square Point of Sale app, tap the navigation menu (≡ More).

    2. Tap Settings > Checkout Settings > Item Details.

    3. Under Tile Size, select Tall (default) for a 4-column grid optimized for density and speed, or Wide for a 2-column grid with more space for longer modifier and variation names.

    4. Under Auto-Progression, toggle On (default) to auto-advance through single-select modifier sections as you complete each selection, or toggle Off to scroll through all sections manually. Multi-select sections always stay in place regardless of this setting.

    Tip: If modifier or variation names appear cut off, switching Tile Size to Wide resolves most truncation.

    Note: Auto-progression is only active when adding a new item to your cart or bill. If you tap an existing item to edit it, you always scroll manually regardless of this setting. Auto-progression is also disabled when a scale is connected.
