Why can’t I process a refund on my Dashboard?

Any transactions processed using Interac Debit has to be refunded in person on your Square Point of Sale app. In order to process a refund through Square, for a payment that was processed using Interac Debit, your customer will need to bring in the original payments card.

Why did my refund fail?

To refund an Interac payment successfully, you’ll need both the original purchase card to be present and have the full refund amount available in your Square balance. If you do not have sufficient funds in your balance to cover the refund, you’ll need to refund your customer outside of Square.

Can I accept tips if my customers are paying using Tap payments?

Yep! You’ll just need to click Contactless in your payment options before your customer can tap. This will prompt them to enter in their tip amount before finishing the payment.

Where do I get stickers to show I accept Interac?

You can order a new marketing kit directly from your Square Dashboard.

Can I swipe an Interac card?

No. As of December 31st, 2015 magstripe (swiped) transactions using Canadian issued Interac cards are banned. You will need to tap any Interac payments processed through Square.

Can I split Interac payments?

When using Split Tender on your Square Point of Sale app, the $100 payment limit for Interac cards applies to each payment taken in the transaction.

This means that if the total transaction is over $100, and your customer asks to split the transaction over multiple payment methods (e.g., multiple cards, cash), as long as the post-split payment is under $100, you can accept your customer’s Interac payment.

However, the $100 payment limit for Interac cards is a security measure designed to protect your customers in case their cards are lost or stolen, please don’t use Split Tender to break up a transaction over a single card to avoid the $100 limit.

Why can’t I accept Interac payments in offline mode?

Chip card transactions and contactless (NFC) payments can’t be processed in Offline Mode at the moment. You’ll need an Internet connection to process these types of payments through Square.
