Enhance your product images directly from your POS with a by removing distracting backgrounds so your products stand out. No photo editing needed.
On iOS or Android, you can choose an existing image from your library or take a new photo. After cropping or adjusting the image, select Remove Background to automatically clear the background. You can undo the change at any time before saving.
Before you begin
You can remove backgrounds from item photos directly from the Square POS app to create clean, professional product images. This feature helps your items stand out in your online store and on in-person POS tiles.
Device compatibility: Background removal is available on both iOS and Android versions of the Square POS app. Make sure your app is updated to the latest version to access this feature.
Image quality: For best results, use clear, well-lit photos with a solid background. The tool performs best when the product is centred and easily distinguishable from the background.
Editing options:
On iOS, you can remove backgrounds automatically after cropping or resizing an image.
On Android, you can also access additional Background and Layout options to resize, rotate or adjust the position of your image before saving.
Remove background from item photos
- Open the Square POS app on your iOS device.
- Tap ≡ More > Items (you can search for, edit or create an item).
- Select the item image you want to edit.
- Tap Edit POS tile.
- Select how you want to update the image:
- Select Choose from library to select an existing image.
- Take a photo to capture a new one.
- Pinch to zoom in or out, and drag to centre and resize the image.
- Tap Crop Photo when finished.
- Tap Remove Background.
- Tap Undo if you want to revert changes.
- Tap Use photo.
- You’ll be directed back to the Item screen.
- Tap Save.
- Open the Square POS app on your Android device.
- Tap ≡ More > Items (here you can search for, edit or create an item).
- Select the item whose image you’d like to edit.
- Tap Edit POS tile.
- Select how you want to update the image:
- Choose from library to select an existing photo.
- Take a photo to capture a new one.
- Crop the image as desired.
- Tap Edit, then select either Background or Layout.

Background options
- Tap Remove background to clear it.
- Tap Undo to restore the original.
- Tap Save when finished.

Layout options
- Size: Resize the image.
- Rotate: Rotate and level the image.
- Position: Adjust the placement of the image within the frame.
- Ratio: Choose from multiple aspect ratios.
- Tap Save to confirm any changes.

Background options
- When returned to the POS Tile screen, tap Save.
- Tap Save on the Items screen again to confirm changes.
