About cash drawers
Connect a cash drawer directly to your Square hardware or through your receipt printer. Use a connected cash drawer to keep track of your cash sales.
Before you begin
You have three connection options for cash drawers:
USB cash drawers
Printer-driven cash drawers
Bluetooth/USB Star Micronics mPOP Receipt Printer and Cash Drawer
To connect a cash drawer, you need to use a compatible device. To connect a printer-driven cash drawer, you need to connect a printer. Learn to connect a printer to your point of sale.
Step 1: Connect a cash drawer to your point of sale
You can connect a cash drawer to Square Stand, Square Terminal, Square Register and an iOS or Android device with Square Reader:
- Tap Settings > Hardware.
- Tap Cash drawers > confirm the appropriate cash drawer is listed under Available Cash Drawers.
- After successfully connecting your printer and creating a printer profile, connect the cash drawer interface cable directly to your receipt printer.
- Tap Settings > Hardware.
- Tap Cash Drawers > tap Test Cash Drawer to ensure the hardware is working as needed.
Note: Printer-driven cash drawers won’t appear under Available Cash Drawers, but you can ensure they work by tapping Test Cash Drawer.
- Plug the mPOP printer into a power source.
- Plug the USB cord directly into your USB hardware hub.
- From the Navigation bar on your Square Register screen, tap the down arrow > Settings > Hardware.
- Tap Printers > Create Printer Station.
- Enter a printer name, select the appropriate printer from the Printer model list, and specify what the printer will be used for (e.g. Receipts, Order Tickets, or Order Ticket Stubs).
- Tap Save.
- Tap Test Printer to ensure the hardware is working as needed.
Note: The Star Micronics mPop printer must have Receipts enabled on the printer station when connected via USB to use the cash drawer.
Step 2: Test your connected cash drawer
Tap ≡ More > Settings > Hardware.
Tap Cash drawers > tap Test cash drawer to ensure the hardware is working as needed.
