Get Started with Square for Retail on Square Register

When you sign up for Square for Retail Plus, you’ll have access to a suite of tools and reports designed specifically for retail businesses. If you’re upgrading from a standard Square account, don’t worry — you won’t lose any of your existing account information. Our Get Started Guide will give you all the details to set up your account.

Access Square for Retail on Your Register

To sign in to Square for Retail on your Register, follow these steps:

  1. Subscribe to Square for Retail Plus on Square Dashboard.

  2. Sign out of Square Point of Sale on your Square Register.
    Note: You can always sign back in to Square Point of Sale, as it will always be an available point of sale software on your device. All transaction, customer, and catalog data will seamlessly sync between both the Square for Retail and Square Point of Sale software.

  3. If this is your first time using the Square Register and you’ve already completed setup, make sure to check for an update by tapping Configure Device > General > About Register > Software Update.

  4. Sign in to Square for Retail using your email and password or by using a device code. Learn to create a device code. Device codes are unique to each Square Register, so repeat the steps to create a device code for each Square Register you’d like to run using Square for Retail.

  5. Learn to Set Up Your Point of Sale with Square for Retail.

  6. Take advantage of exchanges from your point of sale, an improved search interface, cart builder with images, and much more.


Will I have the same access to the same features?

Yes, you’ll still have access to all of the same Square for Retail tools on your Square Register. Learn more about all the Square for Retail Free, Plus and Premium features.

How much does this cost?

Square for Retail Plus or Premium includes a 30-day free trial and is $109 per location, per month.

The rate for Square for Retail Free or Plus on Square Register is 1.6% per card-present transaction.

Can I accept Afterpay in person with Square Register?

Yes! Your Square hardware will allow customers to pay for in-person goods and services using their Afterpay Card via a digital wallet such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Learn more about Afterpay Card and how it works.

Set up is easy—your Square Register, Square Terminal, Square Stand and Square Reader will automatically be set up so your customers can pay for in-person goods or services as soon as Afterpay is enabled from your online Square Dashboard. No additional integration or hardware setup is required.

Can I use the regular Square Point of Sale and Square for Retail Free, Plus or Premium on my device at the same time?

You are able to use both Square Point of Sale and Square for Retail Free/Plus/Premium on your device, but you cannot use them at the same time. To switch between the two, you’ll need to log out of Square Point of Sale and sign in to Square for Retail Free/Plus/Premium, and vice versa.

Can I have inventory tracking on by default?

Yes. Track inventory for any item variations created on your Square Dashboard or in the app for Square for Retail Free and Square for Retail Plus.
