About auto-progression

To streamline order entry, your Square for Restaurants POS progresses you through required configurations that must be made before adding an item to a check. This function ensures that all necessary selections you've set for an item are made before it's sent to the kitchen, simplifying the ordering process. When you have specified required selections for an item, those selections will automatically be displayed first.

Before you begin

When you select an item from your menu, you’ll see selections presented in this order, as applicable:

  1. Seating Selection: If you've enabled seating, this will be your first step.

  2. Variation Choices: Next, choose the size or variation of the item (e.g., small, medium, large).

  3. Modifiers: Apply any necessary modifiers according to the rules (details below).

  4. Notes and Options: Add any additional notes or options for the order.

  5. Add to Check: Finally, if the "Skip item detail screen" option is active, the item will be added to the check as soon as all required modifiers are chosen.

Detailed rules for modifiers

Modifier sets will display in this sequence on the Square for Restaurants point of sale:

  1. Modifier sets with 1 required modifier with 1 maximum

  2. Modifier sets with 1 required modifier with no maximum

  3. Modifier sets with 1 required modifier with >1 maximum

  4. Modifier sets with >1 required modifier with no maximum

  5. Modifier sets with >1 required modifier with >1 maximum

  6. Modifier sets with no required modifiers with >0 maximum

  7. Modifier sets with no required modifiers with no maximum
