Add your Square Card to your digital wallet
About adding Square Card to a digital wallet
Square Card gives you access to spend the funds in your Square balance. Before you receive your physical card, you can add a digital card to your digital wallet to access your funds.
Digital wallets make credit and debit cards available on your smartphone and store your card information securely on your device. When you add your Square Card to your digital wallet, you can make purchases without your physical card. You can complete a payment by tapping your phone at NFC-enabled payment terminals for in-person transactions or in-apps and online on your device.
Before you begin
Digital wallets are only available on smartphones. Tablets are not supported.
You can view the full PAN (card number) of your virtual card to use it for online purchases and manually enter payments before you get your physical card.
The spending limit on your virtual card is £5,000 per day.
If you’ve added other cards to your digital wallet before you added your Square Card, you’ll need to hold and drag your card to the top of the card list to make it your default card. If you don’t want it as your default card, select the Square Card image from the list when paying.
Once you access the virtual card, your transfers will automatically be switched to manual. Your funds will be stored in your balance, which you can access using the physical or virtual Square Card, or to transfer the funds to your linked bank account.
Access your virtual card
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Balance.
- Select a location from Locations.
- Click the gear icon and select Square Card settings.
- Toggle on Show card details.
- The card information will be displayed on the virtual card on your screen.
- To hide the virtual card information, toggle off Show card details.
Add your card to your digital wallet
When Apple or Google enables a physical card for digital wallet usage, they replace the physical card’s primary account number (or PAN, the 16-digit number on the card) with a series of randomly generated numbers, also known as the token. These tokens are used to process the payment without bank account details being shared.
Square Card is usually ready to use instantly with Google Pay.
Note: You can only add your Square Card to Google Pay from the Square app. We currently do not support adding your Square Card directly in Google Wallet.
- Open the Square Point of Sale app and tap More > Balance.
- Select Square Card > Add to Google Pay.
Google uses the same billing address that’s on file with your device for digital card. If that doesn’t work, it will try to use your billing address for the physical card, which you can see in the Square Point of Sale app under Billing Address. Otherwise, you will be prompted to enter your billing address when completing a payment.
Use your digital wallet
Use your card from your digital wallet to make payments, such as:
In-store: Hold your phone up to an in-store payment terminal instead of swiping your card, and your digital wallet will launch automatically. You can then complete a payment using Google Pay.
Online: When shopping online, some websites let you select your digital wallet as your payment option instead of entering your card information.
In-app: You can use your digital wallet for in-app purchases and pay conveniently while on the go.
Note: If your Square Card isn’t your default digital card, then you will need to select it from the list before confirming the transaction.
