Manage Square for Retail subscription

This article is for retail owners who want to manage their Square for Retail Free or Square for Retail Plus subscription.

About Square for Retail

Square for Retail is a full point of sale system designed to streamline your retail business – so your sales, inventory, purchase orders, customer directory and reports are integrated. Square for Retail offers two plans: Square for Retail Free at no monthly cost and Square for Retail Plus at $89 per month, per location. You can pause, downgrade, unsubscribe, or reactivate your subscription at any time from your Square Dashboard.

Before you begin

You’ll need access to a browser on your desktop or laptop computer to get started. You will need to be logged into your Square account using your business owner login. Managing your retail subscription requires access to your Square Dashboard.

Manage your subscription 

View the options below to go over instructions for managing your Square for Retail subscription from your Square Dashboard. Whether you upgrade or downgrade, your account will retain all information (e.g. items, inventory, settings, etc.) throughout the process. If you upgrade, the paid features will be ready to use once you’ve confirmed your payment method.

Activate your Square for Retail subscription

Anyone who signs up or Square for Retail will automatically be enrolled in a 30-day free trial of Square for Retail Plus. At the end of the trial, you can choose to subscribe to Square for Retail Plus to keep using advanced features, or you can downgrade to Square for Retail Free.

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard, visit Settings > Account & Settings.
  2. Click Business information > Pricing & subscriptions.
  3. Locate Square for Retail Free or Square for Retail Plus and click Subscribe.

If you’ve signed up for a free trial and you wish to cancel the subscription, you will need to wait the full 30 days for the trial to complete.

Pause your Square for Retail subscription

You can pause all of your subscriptions to Square products. Similar to a cancellation, each pause is managed per individual subscription. To pause your Square for Retail subscription:

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard, visit Settings > Account & Settings.
  2. Click Business information > Pricing & subscriptions.
  3. Under Subscriptions, click Manage next to the appropriate subscription.
  4. Click Pause Subscription.

Note: You can pause for up to 3 months and unpause at any time. To learn more about pausing subscriptions, visit our Pause Subscription FAQ.

Reactivate your subscription

If you’d like to resubscribe to Square for Retail Free or Square for Retail Plus, you can reactivate your account at any time from your online Square Dashboard.

  1. Log in to your online Square Dashboard, visit Settings > Account & Settings.
  2. Click Business information > Pricing & subscriptions.
  3. Locate Square for Retail Free or Square for Retail Plus and click Subscribe.

When you reactivate your account, all of your previous inventory and vendor information will be available.
