Important changes to your Square Online vouchers

Who’s this article for?
This article is for sellers who want to understand what’s changing with Square Online vouchers and how to navigate to different features after the changes.

About the changes to your Square Online vouchers

Starting in August 2024, you’ll manage your vouchers from one central location – Square Marketing – for use across your Square Online site and Square Marketing campaigns.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • new vouchers: any new vouchers need to be created in Square Marketing, not your Square Online dashboard.

  • Existing vouchers: for vouchers created in Square Online, most voucher types will be automatically migrated to Square Marketing.

  • Voucher changes: some vouchers will work differently after the migration. Other vouchers will no longer be supported and need to be updated before they can migrate.

Before you begin

Make sure you review any emails you’ve received from Square about these changes to see how they apply to your account and the date they take effect.

Voucher status

Each of your Square Online vouchers will be given a status based on how similarly it will function in Square Marketing. Once the migration is complete, we will notify you in Square Online which of your coupons need attention.

Successful

Fully supported in Square Marketing. These vouchers will be automatically migrated, with no action required.

Updated

Supported in Square Marketing and will be migrated but will work differently.

Fail

Not supported in Square Marketing. These vouchers need to be updated for them to be migrated.

Voucher expired

Vouchers that are inactive won’t be migrated.

Voucher exists

This voucher code is active in both Square Online and Square Marketing. The Square Online voucher won’t be migrated and only the Square Marketing voucher is applied at checkout.

If any of your vouchers have the Fail status, you need to update them to make sure the voucher code will continue to work after Square Online Vouchers are deactivated. If any of your vouchers have the Updated status, make sure your voucher marketing reflects any new voucher features or limitations. If none of your active vouchers are impacted, no action is needed.

Changes to Square Online voucher features

You have until 9 October 2024 to update any unsupported vouchers or review any feature changes before the migration is complete.

Free delivery and free delivery vouchers

Free delivery and free delivery vouchers can no longer be applied to specific items or categories. These vouchers now apply to the entire sale including limits to sales over a certain amount.

To update these vouchers before the migration, change the discount to either All orders or Orders over a certain amount.

To update these vouchers after the migration:

  1. sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Vouchers or Shared Settings > Vouchers.
  2. Follow the prompts to change the discount to either All orders or Orders over a certain amount, and migrate your vouchers to Square Marketing.

Free delivery vouchers

Free delivery vouchers can no longer be applied to a specific delivery method. These vouchers now apply to any available delivery method and cannot be limited to specific delivery methods.

To update these vouchers before the migration, use Square Marketing to build a new free delivery voucher with the same voucher code.

To update these vouchers after the migration:

  1. sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Vouchers or Shared Settings > Vouchers.
  2. Follow the prompts to remove delivery method limits and migrate your vouchers to Square Marketing.

Item-specific vouchers

Item-specific vouchers now apply once per order to the most expensive eligible item instead of being applied to each unit of each eligible item in the order. No action is required to migrate this voucher type.

Category-specific vouchers

Category-specific vouchers now apply once per order to the most expensive eligible item instead of being applied to each unit of each eligible item in the order.

If you have existing Square Online category vouchers, your Square Online categories will be migrated to Square Item Library at the same time your vouchers are migrated. Your migrated vouchers will continue to work using your migrated categories.

No action is required to migrate this voucher type.

Voucher codes with special characters

Voucher codes can no longer include certain special characters, such as letters from alphabets not supported by Square. To update these vouchers after the migration:

  1. sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Vouchers or Shared Settings > Vouchers.
  2. Follow the prompts to remove unsupported characters from the voucher code and migrate your vouchers to Square Marketing.

Percent-off vouchers with decimal percentages

Percent-off vouchers can no longer include a decimal in the discount percentage. To update these vouchers after the migration:

  1. sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Sales channels > Online, then Items > Vouchers or Shared Settings > Vouchers.
  2. Follow the prompts to change the percentage discounts to whole numbers and migrate your vouchers to Square Marketing.

Vouchers with redemption limits

For vouchers with limits on the number of redemptions, either per customer or overall, the current redemption count will reset to zero. No action is required to migrate this voucher type.

Vouchers that have already reached their overall redemption limit are considered inactive and won’t be migrated to Square Marketing.
