About accepting Clearpay
Buy now, pay later – or BNPL – is a payment option where a customer pays off a purchase over time while sellers get paid the full amount immediately. With Clearpay, customers pay in four interest-free instalments over six weeks.
Before you begin
-
When customers pay with Clearpay, you will receive the full payment upfront and at no risk to your business.
Clearpay in 4 can be used for in-person purchases up to £1,000.
Clearpay makes an instant approval decision at the time of purchase based on the specific consumer and the order, which may result in a customer’s order being declined at the time of transaction. This will be communicated to customers within their Clearpay app.
To process Clearpay in-person transactions, customers must tap their Clearpay Card via their digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.
Clearpay is not supported with offline payments. Learn how to process offline payments.
Enable Clearpay payments
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & settings > Payments > Payment methods.
- Next to Clearpay, click (•••) > Edit.
- Toggle on In Person.
- Click Save.
Accept Clearpay payments in-person
Once you’ve enabled Clearpay, you can accept payments as you normally would with any other payment option. To start:
Add items to the basket or enter a custom amount. The total transaction must be between £1.00 and £1,000.
Tap Review sale > Charge.
The customer can open their digital Clearpay Card and tap their mobile device to Square hardware or compatible device, if using Tap to Pay.
Send a digital receipt via text or email, or print the receipt as proof of purchase.
The customer will see the transaction via their Clearpay app starting with SQ*. If your customer requires assistance with their Clearpay account, refer them to the Clearpay Help Centre. They can also message the Clearpay support team via their app.
