Enable cash management for Retail POS devices

This article is for retail owners and staff with a Square for Retail Free, Plus, or Premium subscription and device permissions who are using cash management on Square Retail POS devices. Learn more about custom permissions with Square.

About cash management

With Square for Retail, you can use Cash Management to help you keep track of cash sales and consolidate your reporting.

In Square Dashboard or the Square Retail POS app, you can set up your cash drawer settings.

Before you begin

To use Cash Management, you need to create and assign a device profile to your Retail POS device. Learn how to Create and manage device profiles.

You also need access to your Square Dashboard or the Retail POS app and a compatible cash drawer connected to your Retail POS device.

Cash management is not available with Square for Retail on mobile iPhone devices at this time.

Option 1: Enable Cash Management from Square Dashboard

If you use a Device code to sign in to your Retail POS device, you can enable Cash Management from your Square Dashboard.

  1. Sign in to your Square Dashboard and click Settings > Device Management > Devices.

  2. Select a device and click Manage next to Square for Retail, under Assigned device profiles.

  3. Click the Cash Management add-on and turn ON Use on this profile.

  4. Set up your Cash Management preferences.

  5. Click Save.

Option 2: Enable Cash Management from the Retail POS app

You can enable Cash Management from your Retail POS device directly.

  1. Open your Retail POS app.

  2. Tap ≡ More > Settings > Cash Management.

  3. Turn ON Use on this device. If you have a device profile assigned to this device or any other devices, any changes made will apply to all assigned devices.

  4. Set up your Cash Management preferences.

Physically open cash drawer

You can open your cash drawer outside of a sale from the Retail POS app.

  1. Open your Retail POS app and tap Checkout.

  2. Tap the three dots (•••) to open the actions menu.

  3. Tap Open cash drawer (no sale).
