Accept Donations with Square Online
You can use the donation item type to accept donations of up to $5,000.00 on your website. Donation items are fully customisable and you can easily feature them on your homepage to raise awareness for your cause.
Create a Donation Item
From your Square Online Overview page, go to Items > Item Library and click Add Item. Choose Donation from the Item Type menu, then add a title, description and a photo if you like.
Tip: Use the item description field to provide additional information for potential donors.
After entering the basic information for your item, you can customise the suggested donation amounts. Click inside a field and highlight the numbers to edit, or click the X to delete the option. You can add more suggested amounts by typing them into the text box and hitting the enter button.
By default, a custom amount option is included for donations. This allows donors to set their own price (up to the maximum of $5,000.00) instead of choosing one of the suggested amounts. If you don’t want to offer this option, use the toggle to turn it off.
You can also set up modifiers for donation items. For example, you might include a text modifier to allow donations in memory of another person. Learn more about working with modifiers in this article.
Finally, be sure to add a title and description to the SEO settings for your donation item to help your item show up in search results. Learn more about optimising items for search engines.
When you’re finished editing, click Save on the upper right to make your donation available on your website.
Like other types of items, donations have an automatically generated item page, though it’s a bit different from other types of items on your live site. Donors can click on a preset amount to give or use the custom amount option to enter any amount they want. The main difference with donations is that there is no ‘product’, so there’s no delivery or collection option.
Add a Donation Section to Your Website
You can also add a donation section to any page on your website to help increase visibility for potential donors. From your dashboard, go to Website > Edit Site to open the editor. Open the page list on the upper left and select a page to use.
Click the Add section button, select the Donation option and click Add to place it on the page. Use the Choose donation button to connect to a donation item from your store.
Tip: If you haven’t created a donation item yet, you can use the ‘Add new donation’ button to create one without leaving the site editor.
The placeholder information shown in the section will update with the details from your donation item. You can adjust the following options from the settings panel on the left:
Layout: Change the display style for the donation section.
Title: Change the font style and colour for the title text, or turn the title off so it doesn’t display.
Description: Change the font style and colour for the description text, or turn it off so it doesn’t display.
Action button: Change the size and colour of the ‘donate’ button.
Section style: Change the background colour or image for the section.
You can also edit the item details and recommended donation amounts from within the site editor. Click the donation item on the upper left and use the ‘Edit donation details’ button to open the item editing screen. Make any changes you want, then click Save to apply them.
Tip: Choosing a recommended donation amount can encourage visitors to donate. The amount you specify here will be pre-selected in the section, but donors can still pick a different amount before they pay.
When you’re done editing, click the publish button to add the new section to your live website.
Restrict Donations By Location
What if you only want to accept donations from donors living in your area? You can restrict donations to only the locations you’ve set up for delivery. It’s okay if you’re not actually selling anything that needs to be delivered – these settings are also used to control who is allowed to donate or purchase event tickets, memberships, digital items and services from your website. Once you’ve set up which areas you will sell to, go to Setup > Delivery > Advanced Settings and click edit. Use the tick boxes here to allow or disallow donations or purchases from anywhere in the world.
