Troubleshoot with Square Kiosk

Who is this article for?
This article is for business owners or team members using Square Kiosk during the open beta period. Square Kiosk requires a subscription to either Square for Restaurants Free, Plus, or Premium. During this open beta period, you have access to Square Kiosk software with your Square for Restaurants subscription with no additional monthly charge.

Before you begin

Square Kiosk is currently in beta. While we have made every effort to ensure its functionality, you may encounter occasional bugs or unexpected behavior.

Troubleshoot your kiosk

Review each section below. If the troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue you are experiencing, reach out to the Square Beta Team for assistance at Square-Kiosk-Beta@squareup.com.

Restart your kiosk

To restart your kiosk, you’ll need to force quit the Square Kiosk app and restart your iPad. Restarting may require removing your iPad from its mount.

Sign in and sign out

On your iPad, open the Square Kiosk app and sign in with a device code. Use the device code you created for the kiosk device at the location you’d like to set up your kiosk.

If your device code has expired, create a new code on your Square Dashboard.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Device Management.
  2. Click Select the Kiosk Device > Reset Device Code. This new 12 digit code can be used to sign into the kiosk.

To sign out press the Get Started screen with two fingertips for 5 seconds, and you’ll be prompted for the owner passcode to access device settings and sign out.

Locate missing items

If a specific item is not showing up on your kiosk menu:

  1. Visit your Square Dashboard and navigate to Device Management > Kiosk > Edit Items and Categories.
  2. Select Kiosk Items and select the item that is not visible on your kiosk menu.
  3. Make sure Self serve ordering is toggled on for that item, and the item is set to Visible.

Note: If the item or category is not assigned to the kiosk, it will not be visible on your kiosk screen.

If items from the same category are not visible on your kiosk:

  1. Visit your Square Dashboard and navigate to Items > Categories.
  2. Select a category that should be visible on your kiosk.
  3. Under the Channel Visibility section, make sure the category is toggled on for your kiosk.

Update the Square Kiosk app

To update the Square Kiosk app, you need to either update the Testflight app on your iPad. Before downloading or updating Testflight, make sure your iPad is updated with the latest software.

Once you download Testflight, the same link will allow you to download the Square Kiosk app.

If you have already downloaded Testflight, select Join the Beta to download Square Kiosk.

Make sure Guided Access is enabled

Guided Access allows you to “lock” the Square Kiosk app on your iPad and prevent customers from closing the app while the kiosk is operating.

  1. On your iPad’s settings app, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access.
  2. Make sure the Guided Access toggle is turned on.

For more information on setting up Guided Access and starting and ending a Guided Access session, review Apple’s support article Use Guided Access on iPad
