About custom payment methods
A custom payment method is a custom named payment method you can use to track orders received from outside payment sources via Square. (For example, third-party ordering and delivery, non-Square gift cards and memberships.) All transactions recorded in the Square Point of Sale app are included in reporting, giving you a comprehensive view of your sales and transactions through Square.
Before you begin
You can activate and create custom payment methods from Square Dashboard. You can also view customer payment method transactions in your reporting. You can accept custom payment methods from the Square Point of Sale app.
Make sure you are using the most recent version of your Square Point of Sale app and your device software is up to date.
Activate and create custom payment methods
Custom payment methods apply at the account level. Once you activate a custom payment method, it will appear on all your devices.
Sign in to your Square Dashboard and go to Settings > Account & Settings > Payments > Payment Methods.
Click Custom Payment Methods.
Click Add Payment Method and enter a unique name.
Turn Activate on Point of Sale on to have your new custom payment method available on all of your POS devices.
Turn Capture optional tip with payment on to record any tips received from custom payment method transactions, if applicable.
Click Add.
Accept custom payment methods
From your Square Point of Sale app:
Open your app and add items to your customer’s basket.
Tap Charge.
Tap More > Custom Payment Methods. The custom payment methods you created on your Square Dashboard will show up at the end of the list.
Tap the custom payment method you wish to use for this transaction.
Enter an optional tip amount or note as prompted and record payment.
Review custom payment methods in your reports
The total amount received from custom payment methods will show as Other in your reports.
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Reports > Sales summary.
- Expand Other under Total payments collected to see your sales totals split out by your custom payment methods.
- Sign in to Square Dashboard and go to Reports > Payments > Payment methods.
- Expand Other to see a breakout for each custom payment method you have set up.
