Americans Give Thanks with Pecan, Pumpkin, and…Key Lime?

November is pie season in America. While some home bakers relish baking these complex creations for their families, many turn to their local businesses for their Thanksgiving desserts. Square sellers across the country are gearing up for the holiday season as pie sales are expected to rise to new heights – pie sales in November 2024 were up 67% compared to the previous month.

We looked at pie sales nationwide for all of 2024, and the data tells a fascinating story about which pies win the holiday table and which parts of the country fully embrace regional flavors.

As we got closer to Thanksgiving 2024, the top pie picks were dominated by traditional holiday flavors, with pumpkin pie in particular sweeping the nation. 50% of all pumpkin pie purchases in 2024 took place in November.

Nevertheless, Florida stuck with citrus. While the rest of America embraces autumn spices, Florida stays committed to key lime pie. Even in November, when pumpkin, pecan, and apple dominate in nearly every state, key lime pie remained Florida’s best seller.

Pie preferences are heavily influenced by local produce and traditions. Blueberry pie was the top choice year-round in Maine, a state famous for its wild blueberry harvest. Across Southern states and in Delaware, pecan and sweet potato pies performed well, reflecting both the region’s agricultural and culinary heritage. And with key lime pie originating in the Florida Keys, the state and some of its neighbors selected the sour and sweet dessert.

While key lime pie commanded 55% of all pie sales in Florida throughout 2024, it also took over the national map in the summer, with a peak in June:

And while the idiom “as American as apple pie” may in fact reference a British import, apple took the top spot in this pie contest (26% of sales), followed by key lime (25%) and pumpkin (10%). Naturally, a pie chart:
