Mila Sensitive Facial Treatment

Removes Facial Hair

A dermaplane facial has a similar function to the “shaving your face” fad. But it is much more effective because of the type of blade used. This one is much sharper than what you can typically purchase in stores, and by having a professional aesthetician take care of those problem areas you are much more likely to experience a better result.

Exfoliates Skin

While many people first consider getting a dermaplane facial as a pain-free method to hair removal, the dermaplane facial hosts many other benefits. And one of these is its ability to remove dead skin cells from the face. Unlike with microdermabrasion and other exfoliation techniques, dermaplaning does not require any special chemicals and is non-abrasive. This makes it great for those with sensitive skin while leaving the skin looking naturally flawless and feeling smooth to the touch.

Anti-Aging Properties

First let’s debunk what exactly anti-aging is. In no way does anti-aging products and treatments reverse aging of the skin. What it does do is prevent any further damage, and help reduce the appearance of the effects damage has already done to the skin. This makes your skin look fresher and younger. With a dermaplane facial, you essentially shave off that entire top layer of dead skin, reducing the effects of fine lines, hyperpigmentation and acne scars. This makes the skin look more awake and revitalized, which gives you that younger appearance.

Painless

Many hair removal treatments as you probably already know are filled with frustration and pain. Whether you normally get your facial hair waxed or tweezed, or if you’ve considered getting it removed with lasers, the pain of hair removal is unnecessary. While a dermaplane facial may seem the scariest, it is actually the most harmless. It provides for a completely painless and surprisingly relaxing experience.

No Down Time

With many other treatments, your face may be beet red after, you fear leaving the house and you may be required to do some at-home maintenance. With a dermaplane facial, all you need to do is come in for your treatment and use a gentle facial cleanser that night.

Makeup Goes on Smoothly

And from all these wonderful benefits comes how amazing your skin will look as well as how beautiful your makeup will look. Once you get a dermaplane facial, your makeup will easily glide over your now smooth and movie star quality skin.

Why Choose Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture promotes subtle, natural looking changes to the skin over time. As you age, your skin’s inner layer loses collagen and, a result becomes less supple and firm.

Acupuncture remedies the surface effects of ageing by triggering a self-repair response in the skin and addressing the internal stressors that contribute to the signs of ageing. This ancient beauty secret is a non-invasive and natural approach to reduce the signs of ageing and help skin regain its youthful glow as well as helping to reduce the appearance of scarring and skin pigmentation’s.

It is the only targeted beauty treatment with direct health and well-being benefits. The real beauty of getting cosmetic acupuncture is it also includes traditional acupuncture at the same time, combining beauty and health.

Skin tightening and face lift with Cosmetic Acupuncture is a natural alternative to a cosmetic face lift.

Our applications of Cosmetic Acupuncture treatments are tailored to address a variety of cosmetic needs for:

  • facial rejuvenation by growing new collagen
  • face and neck lift by achieving skin tightening via collagen contraction
  • slimming and contouring, by using focused acupuncture points to rupture fat cells for Lipolysis and skin tightening.

How Does it Work?

Our skin remains tight when there is a high concentration of collagen and elastin in the dermis layer of the skin. When the body lowers its production of collagen, the upper layers of skin begin to wrinkle and sag. To reverse this, Cosmetic Acupuncture stimulates collagen growth by penetrating the dermis layer. This causes a small injury to the tissue. However, as the tissue heals it produces new collagen that tightens the skin naturally.

Skin tightening occurs via collagen contraction, which enables the face, neck, or chest to improve in appearance as new collagen continues to build. The treatment, as a result, reduces wrinkles and fine lines, it lifts and tightens areas of sagging skin, and rejuvenates skin to restore a more youthful appearance.

Cosmetic acupuncture focuses on inserting fine needles to specific points and muscles of the face to improve the elasticity of the skin as well as re-sculpting the face, neck and jaw areas to decrease wrinkles and promote a healthier glowing appearance by activating natural collagen production. The treatment also works on lifting the face particularly where the face begins to sag around the cheek and beneath the chin areas. The result is revitalized and nourished skin, a brighter complexion and a more youthful appearance.

IS IT PAINFUL?

Most clients only feel minimal discomfort during the procedure.

HOW LONG DOES THE TREATMENT TAKE?

The size of the treatment area and the plan chosen affects the duration of the treatment session, which can range between 30 and 90 minutes.

ARE THERE NY SIDE EFFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TREATMENT?

Clients may experience skin redness for a few days after the session. Some mild swelling, tingling or tenderness may occur temporarily. Less common effects include slight bruising and skin sensitivity. An after care protocol will be provided to minimise any effects.

Top Ten Results of Cosmetic Acupuncture

1. Helps erase years off your face

Although each face is different, it is common that after a series of treatments, patients often appear 5-10 years younger. They remark that their others notice and most of all they are happy with the results.

2. Cosmetic Acupuncture increases blood circulation to your skin

As we age, collagen and elastin found in our skin start to cake and break down. Cosmetic Acupuncture stimulates production of these vital proteins that slow down as we age. The needles work their magic to bring life back to your face, neck and scalp.

The increased circulation translates into better skin tone, fewer fine lines, and even some lift around sagging jowls and baggy eyes.

3. Restore Confidence

It’s not about how others view us, it’s about how you feel about yourself! We will treat any specified gender and any age. It’s all about helping you glow, whatever that means to you.

4. It’s natural and safe

You won’t need to worry about injectable side effects, scarring, pharmaceutical toxicity, surgical risks or a botched procedure.

5. Cosmetic Acupuncture is good for your health

You may as well grab the added value of gaining all the extra health benefits acupuncture. Your face is just a reflex zone of whatever else is happening in your body. We will not only work on your face in a cosmetic acupuncture session but the rest of your body will receive needles too. A full health intake will be needed to make sure you not only get the facial benefits, but you likely will see other nagging health symptoms get better such as improved sleep, improved digestion, less headaches and decreased PMS or menopause symptoms.

6. Treat stubborn skin conditions

Cosmetic Acupuncture is incredible at treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis.

7. Long lasting effects

The effects of treatment can often last years. Once you complete a solid base of treatments (that vary from person to person but usually around 5-10 weekly sessions) you can get away with coming in less often for maintenance tune-ups. We don’t want you to be a slave to any treatment. Our goal is that you receive enough care that you feel confident and comfortable enough to start spacing them out on your own terms.

8. It’s relaxing

Cosmetic acupuncture is relaxing! As with all our acupuncture treatments, the treatment stimulates the “feel good” opiates found in the brain. Endorphins, serotonin and cortisol have all been found to be produced via acupuncture; the chemicals you need to achieve mental and emotional well being. You will leave feeling calm, grounded and recharged.

9. Cosmetic acupuncture is cheap

Acupuncture Center Toronto offers cosmetic acupuncture with rates that are affordable in comparison to many other invasive and surgical cosmetic procedures. Value is as important to us as it is to you. You will save hundreds to thousands of dollars compared to injectable procedures or surgery. With the average cost of treating one area with Botox being upwards of $300/session, we can provide amazing line diminishing results for around half the cost.

10. No lost time

No surgical recovery, no time in hiding in bandages, and no risk of feeling terrible afterwards. Get off the the table and immediately look and feel radiant.

Cosmetic Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Although acupuncture should never be painful, there are more needles involved with cosmetic acupuncture. If you are scared/nervous of needles the treatment probably isn’t the best choice for you. Although it’s not painful, the needles can sometimes feel pinching and uncomfortable.

Are there side effects?

Because cosmetic acupuncture involves an increased volume of applied needles and facial cupping applies suction, there is not-so-often bruising. Although it is uncommon, it does happen on a very rare occasion.

How many sessions do I need?

Although everyone’s face responds to treatment at a different pace, we aim for you to see results after your first appointment. Reaching your aesthetic goals will usually require a series of approximately 10 sessions. Having said that, we work with patients on setting up a treatment frequency and pace that they can manage. Some patients see through a series of treatments while others find that they find benefit from once in while “tune-ups”. Although we will recommend a treatment frequency protocol that is ideal, no pressure, do what works best for your schedule and budget.

Is Cosmetic Acupuncture Covered by Insurance?

All Cosmetic Appointments are subject to HST. As a result, receipts will itemize the- “HST”, “Acupuncture” and “Cosmetic Acupuncture” portions of each appointment.

It is your responsibility to check the details of your benefit package prior to booking as insurance plans widely vary from organization to organization.

We cannot customize or “tweak” receipts based on individual benefit plans.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Can I get cosmetic acupuncture if I’ve had Botox, injectables or other cosmetic procedures?

No. You will need to hold off for 8 weeks before we can begin. Cosmetic Acupuncture/facial cupping can interfere with other recent procedures.

Can I get Cosmetic Acupuncture if I’m pregnant?

No. For safety reasons, we cannot provide Cosmetic Acupuncture to pregnant folks. Cosmetic Acupuncture requires more needles than is safe to administer during pregnancy. The goal is to direct as much blood and circulation towards the uterus and not the face. Come chill with us after you’ve given birth and we’ll get your glow on then!

How should I prepare for my treatment?

Remove make-up

Please ensure that all make-up is removed. We need to work with a “clean slate” face in order to make swabbing and disinfection accessible and also making sure we have a clear view without make-up getting in the way of the therapists work. Feel free to a few minutes early to remove make-up and reapply after your session in the washroom.

Bring shorts

Please bring a pair of shorts as we will be needling points on the body.

Why should I try Cosmetic Acupuncture over other conventional methods?

This Ancient Chinese beauty secret now becoming a popular alternative to plastic surgery, Botox injections and pharmaceuticals. Our facial rejuvenation acupuncture involves bringing fresh oxygenated blood to the face. It has been proven to stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein found in skin cells which stops being produced as we age. A lack of collagen is responsible for wrinkles, fine lines and loss of skin elasticity. The treatment slows down the aging process from within and is well suited for both female and male patients. Bring out your inner radiance without the pharmaceutical side effects or nerve damage of conventional methods.

Is there a facial that can help wrinkles?

Basic facials may temporarily improve skin, but they can’t treat severe skin issues, including wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and anything more than very mild acne. Those skin concerns typically require more intensive solutions, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasions, or collagen-inducing laser treatments.

Is there a facial for men?

Men’s facials are a lot like women’s facials but are formulated to the unique needs of men’s skin. They usually deal with problems men commonly face, such as razor burn and ingrown hairs, dullness, and sensitivity.

Why are facials important?

You exercise often, you eat right and you get frequent haircuts, so why wouldn’t you get a facial? As with most other beauty and health matters, facials help prevent and treat common problems.

“Facials are important because they keep on top of things that happen seasonally”

Take the fall season, for example. When you turn the heat on for the first time in October, you might notice a change in your skin. Inside heat can dehydrate skin and facials can drastically correct a lack of moisture. And every April when the weather warms up a bit, skin can get oilier and create breakouts. Facials can help with these and many other skin ailments.

Skin tag removal

Skin tag removal is one of the most commonly performed procedures at Maria Cosmetic Center. Skin tags, also known as acrochorda (dermatology), are bits of benign skin growth that hang from the surrounding skin by a narrow stalk. Skin tags can be smooth or wrinkled, flesh colored or slightly brown, and usually irregular in shape.

Skin tag may appear on any part of the human body. They are more often found on the neck, groin, armpits, eyelids, and under the breasts, and other areas where skin frequently rubs against skin or clothing.

Small skin tags can be removed easily without anesthesia, while larger skin tags may require some topical anesthesia prior to the procedure.

Q: What are those red “moles” on my skin?

A: Most likely a Cherry Angioma

Cherry Angioma is a big name for a little, benign red growth on the skin that is made up of tiny blood vessels (which provides its characteristic red color). They are typically the size of freckles or small moles, but they can be larger. Like freckles and moles, they can be either flat or elevated and can pop up anywhere on the body. Most often, they appear on the chest, abdomen, back, arms and legs. The cause is unknown, but there does seem to be a genetic component. As if you need another reason to wear sunscreen daily, sun exposure is known to encourage the appearance of Cherry Angiomas. There is no topical cream that removes cherry angiomas, so you will need to see a skin expert if you want them to go away. Fortunately, these benign (non-cancerous) bumps can be safely and easily removed using the heat and light from a cosmetic laser or electrical current (LamProbe). Certain skin cancers can have a similar appearance, so it is important to have a board certified Dermatologist or certified PA-C check out any unusual lesions that crop up on your skin before seeking cosmetic removal.

Injection

Botox® or “botulinum toxin A” is a neurotoxin complex used to relax targeted muscles. It’s injected directly into the muscle to induce this reaction. A trained practitioner analyzes the skin, muscle, and nerve impulses before completing the procedure. Once injected, nerve impulses in the muscle are blocked with this purified protein.

Patients with deep, creased wrinkles or “dynamic wrinkles” require immediate attention. Botox® aids in targeting these naturally produced wrinkles. As the muscle(s) relax, the skin begins to smooth out and regain elasticity.

Botox® aids patients with upper facial wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet (corners of eyes).

Types of wrinkles include:

Dynamic Wrinkles: Created by muscle movement (smiling, crying, laughing)

Static Wrinkles: Created without movement as the skin ages and loses elasticity.

Under the supervision of a trained specialist, the Botox® injection will not eliminate the use of one’s facial muscles nor will it inhibit one’s smile. The technique provides a smoothing effect without preventing natural movement.

This is a world-leading procedure and millions of cases are completed around the world. It’s a dynamic, top of the line procedure perfect for all candidates.

Ideal Candidate for Botox®

In general, the clinic will examine a patient before determining the appropriate course of action. An ideal candidate is someone with fine lines/wrinkles between the ages of 18 and 65.

Procedure

After the consultation with a certified injectionist, a treatment plan will be penned. This will encompass one’s medical history, goals, treatment areas, and all related details. The injection areas are observed to pinpoint ideal injection sites and anatomical features.

Treatment

Dermal fillers are used to improve facial features near the cheeks, lips, and chin. A specialist will define the use of injections and which areas will be targeted to lessen the signs of aging. Patients choosing to pursue dermal fillers will notice an increase in collagen and elastin development. This treatment is an exceptional and recommended alternative to surgical procedures and related exceedingly invasive treatments.

Before the treatment, the nurse will apply a topical numbing gel to soothe the injection site. A fine needle is used to inject the dermal filler into the outer layer of skin. The injectionist continues to analyze the skin during this stage and massages the area to customize results.

This treatment will require a 30-40 minute session under the watchful eyes of a certified injectionist.

Once the injection has taken place, the filler will bind and add volume to the region. In rare cases, a patient will develop little redness and mild bleeding. This will dissipate in no more than an hour. If minor swelling is present, a robust recovery plan is offered and the skin will settle in three days.

Patients without these side effects can return to their daily activities immediately. If necessary, doctor assistant will follow-up to see how you’re doing.

Injection Areas

Each case is distinct and the signs of aging will vary based on genetic disposition, environmental factors, and other related variables. The specialist will take these into account before pinpointing key target regions around the face.

What are some of the injection areas?

Under Eyes

Forehead Wrinkles

Cheeks

Jawline and Chin

Nose

Lips

Nasolabial Folds

Area(s) With Scarring from Acne

These injection areas are vigilantly examined to guarantee each injection provides maximum value. The specialist will use state-of-the-art equipment to manage the completion of this procedure. Dermal Fillers in the hands of a professional can lead to delicate, aesthetically pleasing results. Results

Dermal filler procedures require meticulous attention to detail and a seasoned injectionist offering refined excellence throughout the experience. At this clinic, the results are top-notch and no stone is left unturned to offer superior quality.

The specialist will offer a comprehensive plan to control volume, balance, and texture. If these factors remain unaccounted for, the results can vary and injection sites easily become clumpy. For a smooth, easy-going finish, please consult this clinic and take advantage of a leading specialist as soon as possible.

In general, the final results will appear in 1-2 weeks depending on the patient’s skin, medical history, and response to treatment. If minor swelling is present, the full two weeks are required for suitable assessment of the dermal fillers. Many patients state they notice a difference instantaneously once the dermal filler is injected. This will depend on the skin type and how it handles the new filler.

The team prides itself on offering subtle results that aesthetically pleasing and remove signs of aging. This is a vigorous cosmetic procedure and your trained professional will use his/her years of experience to offer a picture-perfect finish.

To schedule your no-obligation consultation, call in and book a meeting with one of the clinic’s top-tier specialists. The consultation will include an array of information such as your skin’s condition, medical history, procedural details, and goals. This treatment is the ultimate anti-aging tool to reduce the wrinkles and creasing.

Peeling

Chemical peels can improve the skin’s appearance. In this treatment, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which makes it “blister” and eventually peel off. The new skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin.

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, or hands. They can be used to:

  • Reduce fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth
  • Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
  • Improve the appearance of mild scars
  • Treat certain types of acne
  • Reduce age spots, freckles, and dark patches (melasma) due to pregnancyor taking birth control pills
  • Improve the look and feel of skin

Areas of sun damage may improve after chemical peeling.

Chemical Peel

The fruit acid peeling is a medical aesthetic therapy to improve the outward appearance of your skin.

Fruit acids are generally obtained by crop products like grapes, apples, lemons, oranges and sugar cane. They result in a superficial, fine peeling of the skin. Thus the skin becomes perceptibly smoother, purer and finer. It appears fresher, younger and more regular.

Which problems can be treaded with a fruit acid peeling?

It is a medically reasonable and effective treatment for acne, impure and large-pored skin, ight induced pigment spots and age marks, as well as for toneless skin.

Fruit acid peelings are the mildest forms of medical peelings nd they are also suited for sensible skin.

How do I prepare my skin for the fruit acid peeling?

Requirement for an even effect of the peeling is a good preparation of the skin. As a preparation emulsion you should use an ointment recommended by us, which should be applied daily to the well dried skin, which is foreseen for the peeling. You should have performed the pretreatment for approximately 10 days before the peeling, to prepare the skin optimally.

How does the treatment feel like?

After the cleaning of the skin, the fruit acid gel is applied to the skin and operates for 3-7 minutes. While the peeling it is usual to feel a prickle or a light burning on the skin. The professional cosmetician will always be on hand to observe your skin.

How does the skin feel like after the peeling and how do I look like after the treatment?

After the peeling, your skin might be reddened. For easing, the cosmetician performs a cooling and special care products will be applied. Even a light makeup can be applied on your demand, so you can pursue your habitual activities after the peeling.

What has to be considered after the treatment?

Sunbathes should be avoided for 4 weeks after the peeling.

How many sessions are recommended?

The fruit acid peeling is performed 6-8 times in weekly intervals and if possible repeated every 4-8 weeks, in order to maintain the improved outward appearance of the skin.

Dermamelan

One of the most common concerns that we see at the Institute of Cosmetic in Toronto, Ontario is pigmentation and melasma (brown spots on the skin). Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan is a topical de–pigmentation procedure that is extremely versatile and adapts well to any skin type. Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan softens or eliminates mild to severe pigmentation, while helping to reveal the luminosity and tone of the skin. Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase, a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process (how excessive brown develops). Several of the substances present in the Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan formulation work by blocking this enzyme, or even by inverting the metabolic process of the transformation chain.

A chemical peel is applied to the face prior to the application of the Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan mask. Derm–Eclat™/Dermamelan is a thick “mask–like” substance that is applied to the full face. It is left on for 8–12 hours and can be washed off at home. Clints can expect mild to significant peeling at around day 2–5 and can continue for up to a week. Two weeks later the mask will be re–applied to any remaining spots. Overall, patients can expect a significant reduction in areas of hyperpigmentation / melasma. An at–home maintenance cream is given to clients and is to be used on a daily basis post–treatment.

Calcium peels are exfoliation treatments which smooth out upper layers of the skin with the use a acid. Calcium peels are great options for pigmentation as it exfoliates the top surface of the skin where superficial scarring lies.

Calcium peels are also popular for mature skins who want to regenerate the skin on a deeper level than what is typically achieved with microdermabrasion treatment or Calcium peels. By stimulating cutaneous shedding, we are able to exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin which improves pigmentation and scarring. Calcium peels are safe for all skin types.

Calcium Peel FAQs

What Are Post Peel Instructions?

After receiving a Calcium peel, avoid sun exposure as much as possible when healing. Do not pick or peel the skin as these actions can cause scarring. Avoid excessive exercise for 24-48 hours post treatment as well.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of treatments varies from individual to individual depending on the condition treated and purpose for treatment. For corrective procedures, 6 treatments are typical spaced approximately 2-4 weeks apart. For maintenance programs, sensitive skins/Rosacea sufferers, or anti-aging remedies, peels may be scheduled every 28 days apart depending on the intensity of the peel.

What Are Alphahydroxy Acids?

Alphahydroxy acids are water soluble acids which have been used for years for skin rejuvenation. These are naturally occurring acids found in fruits and other foods. They are used in many concentrations, however, commonly used to formulate the lightest of peels. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. AHA peels may be used to treat fine lines, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne.

What Degree Of Peeling Should I Expect?

The degree of peeling depends on the strength/depth of the peel and your particular skin condition we are treating. Some clients will get a fair amount of flaking while others do not have any at all. This does not mean the peel did not work. We are slowly breaking down the skin’s top layer which may take a few sessions to penetrate deeply. This means the product has penetrated and exfoliated the skin at a microscopic level. In general, whether you have experienced heavy peeling or not the end results is a glowing and smooth skin complexion.

Micro Needling

Microneedling therapy is a very simple procedure that uses a hand-controlled device with tiny, shallow needles to puncture your outer layer of skin to create a controlled skin injury. This damage to the skin will stimulate your body to produce new collagen and elastin. The freshly produced collagen will rejuvenate your skin by filling in fine lines, resulting in an overall improvement in the texture and tightness of your skin by removing the wrinkles, scars and stretch marks that can make you look younger as you age.

Additionally, microneedling is not restricted to the face. It can be used on many other body parts, such as arms, legs, neck, back, hands and abdomen.

One microneedling session generally takes 30 minutes. At first, your skin will appear a little bit red — similar to a light sunburn, but your skin will return to normal in a couple of days. The natural growth of collagen will not happen instantly; it takes place over weeks and months. This treatment is not designed to be an “instant fix,” but is intended to improve the health of your skin in the long term.

How many numbers of treatments does one need?

The number of treatments is predicated on two things:

the first being the results you want to achieve, and the second being which part of the body treatment is being performed on. For wrinkles or stretch marks, depending on the severity, you may need 4 to 8 microneedling treatments to achieve optimal results.

Please note that all treatments are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to ensure the health and safety of your skin. The risk involved in microneedling treatments are minimal. After a treatment, dry skin or red discoloration may occur, which will typically subside within a week.

What skin conditions can be treated with micro needling?

Wrinkles, Stretch marks, Scars, Acne scarring, Skin tone, Fine lines, Loose skin, Large pores, Discoloration, Regardless of your skin color or type is, microneedling is the best treatment you can have to have to make your skin look fresh and younger.

Aromatherapy uses a holistic approach that combines pleasant smelling essential oils with massage to bring about positive physical and psychological effects,

What is Aromatherapy Massage?

Aromatherapy means “treatment using scents”. It uses a holistic approach to care for the body using pleasant smelling essential oils, such as rose, lemon, lavender or peppermint. These oils are massaged into the skin, inhaled directly or diffused to scent an entire room.

An aromatherapist will take your medical history, emotional condition, general health and lifestyle into account before planning your course of treatment.

How Can it Help?

Massage with aromatherapy oils is a wonderfully relaxing and soothing experience. Depending on an individual’s needs, essential oils can be used to soothe, uplift, energise, relax or stimulate. Therapists are particularly sensitive to their clients’ need for modesty and the client is always covered with sheets or towels throughout the massage, which are removed only over the small portion of skin on which the therapist intends to work.

Treatment can range from a back massage to a full body.

If you need improvement in health problems from anxiety to poor sleep, you may want to consider aromatherapy. In this kind of treatment, you use extracts from plants called essential oils, by either breathing them through your nose or putting them on your skin. Some people put the oils on their skin when they get a massage or take a bath.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are made from flower, herb, and tree parts, like bark, roots, peels, and petals. The cells that give a plant its fragrant smell are its “essence.” When an essence is extracted from a plant, it becomes an essential oil.

It takes a lot of plant product to make essential oils. More than 200 pounds of lavender flowers are used to make just 1 pound of lavender essential oil.

Not all products made with plant essence are essential oils. True essential oils aren’t blended with other chemicals or fragrances. They’re made using a specific process that doesn’t change the chemistry of the plant.

Lemon, chamomile, lavender, cedarwood, and bergamot are a few of the essential oils used regularly in aromatherapy. How Aromatherapy Works

Experts think aromatherapy activates areas in your nose called smell receptors, which send messages through your nervous system to your brain.

The oils may activate certain areas of your brain, like your limbic system, which plays a role in your emotions. They could also have an impact on your hypothalamus, which may respond to the oil by creating feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin.

Some experts think that when you put essential oils on your skin, they cause a response in your skin and other parts of your body, like your joints.

What Is Aromatherapy Used For?

You shouldn’t use aromatherapy instead of your regular medical treatment. But for some conditions, research shows that aromatherapy can have health benefits. It may:

Ease stress, anxiety, and depression

Boost feelings of relaxation

Improve sleep

Help improve quality of life for people with long-term health problems like dementia

Ease certain types of pain, including pain from kidney stones and osteoarthritis of the knee

Fight bacteria when you put them on your skin

Ease some of the side effects of cancer treatment, like nausea and pain

SUGGESTED:

Is It Safe?

Aromatherapy is generally safe. Essential oils can cause side effects, though. Some can irritate your eyes, skin, or mucous membranes in your nose. They can also cause mild allergic reactions.

If you drink some essential oils they can hurt your kidneys or liver. It’s rare that people take essential oils by mouth, and you shouldn’t do it unless your doctor says it’s OK.

If you’re new to aromatherapy, work with an aromatherapist or your doctor. And keep in mind that essential oils aren’t regulated by the FDA, which means that unlike drugs, the agency doesn’t check to see if they’re safe or work the way they’re supposed to.

Essential oils have been getting a lot of buzz recently for helping with everything from headaches to sleep to sore throats. But do these concentrated plant-based oils work?

Essential oils can make a positive impact on your health and well-being as long as you use them in a safe way.

Want to give essential oils a try? Learn what conditions they may help treat and how to find quality essential oils, since not all products are created equal.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are basically plant extracts. They’re made by steaming or pressing various parts of a plant (flowers, bark, leaves or fruit) to capture the compounds that produce fragrance. It can take several pounds of a plant to produce a single bottle of essential oil. In addition to creating scent, essential oils perform other functions in plants, too.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries. When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain.

Essential oils can also be absorbed by the skin. A massage therapist might add a drop or two of wintergreen to oil to help relax tight muscles during a rubdown. A skincare company may add lavender to bath salts to create a soothing soak.

What Are Essential Oils Good For?

Although people claim essential oils are natural remedies for a number of ailments, there’s not enough research to determine their effectiveness in human health. Results of lab studies are promising — one at Johns Hopkins found that certain essential oils could kill a type of Lyme bacteria better than antibiotics — but results in human clinical trials are mixed.

Some studies indicate that there’s a benefit to using essential oils while others show no improvement in symptoms. Clinical trials have looked at whether essential oils can alleviate conditions such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Insomnia
  • Low appetite
  • Dry mouth

How Can You Use Essential Oils Safely?

The quality of essential oils on the market varies greatly, from pure essential oils to those diluted with less expensive ingredients. And because there’s no regulation, the label may not even list everything that’s in the bottle you’re buying. That’s why essential oils should not be ingested.

Johns Hopkins also advises against using essential oil diffusers, small household appliances that create scented vapor. Diffusion in a public area or household with multiple members can affect people differently. For example, peppermint is often recommended for headaches. But if you use it around a child who’s less than 30 months old, the child can become agitated. It could have a negative effect. Additionally, someone with fast heartbeat can react adversely to peppermint.

The safest ways to use essential oils include:

  • Aromatherapy accessories:
  •  Necklaces, bracelets and keychains made with absorbent materials you apply essential oils to and sniff throughout the day.
  • Body oil: A mixture of essential oils with a carrier oil such as olive, jojoba or coconut oil that can be massaged into skin. Because essential oils are concentrated, they can cause irritation. Avoid using them full-strength on skin.
  • Aroma stick: Also called an essential oil inhaler, these portable plastic sticks have an absorbent wick that soaks up essential oil. They come with a cover to keep the scent under wraps until you’re ready.

Allergic reactions to essential oils

A small number of people may experience irritation or allergic reactions to certain essential oils. You’re more likely to have a bad reaction if you have atopic dermatitis or a history of reactions to topical products. Although you can experience a reaction to any essential oil, some are more likely to be problematic, including:

  • Oregano oil
  • Cinnamon bark oil
  • Jasmine oil
  • Lemongrass oil
  • Ylang-ylang oil
  • Chamomile oil
  • Bergamot oil

Because pure essential oils are potent, diluting them in a carrier oil is the best way to avoid a bad reaction when applying directly to the skin. If you get a red, itchy rash or hives after applying essential oils, see a doctor. You may be having an allergic reaction.

Which Essential Oils Are Best?

There are dozens of essential oils, all with different fragrances and chemical makeups. Which essential oils are best depends on what symptoms you’re looking to ease or fragrances you prefer. Some of the most popular essential oils include:

  • Lavender oil: Many people find the lavender scent relaxing. It’s often used to help relieve stress and anxiety and promote good sleep.
  • Tea tree oil: Also called melaleuca, this essential oil was used by Australia’s aboriginal people for wound healing. Today, it’s commonly used for acne, athlete’s foot and insect bites.
  • Peppermint oil: There’s some evidence peppermint essential oil helps relieve irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms when taken in an enteric-coated capsule (from a trusted health supplement provider). It may also relieve tension headaches when applied topically.
  • Lemon oil: Many people find the citrusy scent of lemon oil a mood booster. It’s also often used in homemade cleaning products.

How to find quality essential oils

The most important thing to consider when shopping for essential oils is product quality. But figuring out which oils are the best is challenging, since there’s no government agency in the U.S. that provides a grading system or certification for essential oils. A big problem? Many companies claim their essential oils are “therapeutic grade,” but that’s just a marketing term.

Unfortunately, there are lots of products you might find online or in stores that aren’t harvested correctly or may have something in them that isn’t listed on the label.

Here are some tips to help you shop for pure essential oils:

  • Look at the label: It should include the Latin name of the plant, information on purity or other ingredients added to it, and the country in which the plant was grown.
  • Evaluate the company: Purchase products from a well-known and reputable aromatherapy company that’s been around for several years.
  • Choose dark-colored, glass containers: Pure essential oils are highly concentrated. They can dissolve plastic bottles over time, tainting the oil. Most companies package essential oils in small brown or blue glass bottles to protect the quality.
  • Avoid “fragrance oils”: Fragrance or perfume oils are made from essential oils combined with chemicals or entirely from chemicals. They’re not suitable for aromatherapy — instead, look for bottles that contain a single essential oil in its purest form (100% essential oil with no other fillers).
  • Compare prices: Essential oils range in price, depending on how involved harvesting and production are. Within a line, there should be a wide variety of prices — rose absolute or sandalwood oils will be more expensive, while sweet orange oil will be on the less expensive end. If you find a rock-bottom price for an expensive essential oil, it probably isn’t pure.

Essential oils can lift your mood and make you feel good with just a whiff of their fragrance. For some people they may even help alleviate the symptoms of various conditions.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping has become a hot topic in recent years with news of models, movie stars and Olympic athletes using cups to ease aches and pains and enhance health and well-being. But cupping isn’t just for celebrities.

“It can be beneficial for almost anyone,” says Ruth Lehmann, an acupuncturist at Henry Ford Health. “Instead of using medication to achieve a certain outcome, we use cupping to help trigger the body’s own healing mechanisms.”

Cupping has become a hot topic in recent years with news of models, movie stars and Olympic athletes using cups to ease aches and pains and enhance health and well-being. But cupping isn’t just for celebrities.“Instead of using medication to achieve a certain outcome, we use cupping to help trigger the body’s own healing mechanisms.”

FAQ: Cupping

Cupping is a form of therapy that originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. It has been used in the West for decades to encourage healing. We asked Lehmann to answer commonly asked questions about this seemingly mystical therapy:

Q: What is cupping?

A: Cupping is almost like a deep tissue massage with suction and decompression. Chinese medical practitioners believe cupping helps keep the body in balance, increases overall blood flow and reduces pain. Some athletes use this type of therapy to decrease muscle recovery time. It is often used in conjunction with acupuncture or acupressure.

Q: How does cupping work?

A: Cupping uses a cup to pull an area of skin into a suction that decompresses muscles and connective tissue. This promotes blood flow to the compromised area, enhances circulation and helps to increase the body’s own healing processes — almost like a backward deep tissue massage. There are several different types of cups ranging from glass to silicone and bamboo, and there are different ways to use them.

Sometimes practitioners will only use one or two cups. Other times, they’ll cover your entire back with cups. Two popular types of cupping: stationary and sliding. Stationary cupping uses suction only, keeping the cups in place for a set time, usually 5 to 10 minutes. Sliding cupping is more like a deep tissue massage where the provider moves the cups over the area of pain or concern.

Q: What can I expect during and after a cupping session?

A: Some people love the sensation. Others hate it. In most cases, you will notice some bruising around the treated area. Bruises may be pink, red or sometimes purple or dark brown. Bruising typically goes away within two weeks. You may also notice changes on the surface of the skin. It’s important to take care of yourself after a treatment. Stay warm, cover up, drink plenty of water and eat wholesome foods. You should also avoid swimming or showering within three hours of a cupping session.

Q: Which conditions respond to cupping?

A: Practitioners use cupping to treat a wide variety of conditions. They think it’s especially effective at treating pain and muscle aches. Applying cups to specific acupressure points may also help alleviate digestive complaints, skin issues and respiratory problems.

Q: What are the side effects?

A: Side effects are typically mild and include bruising and irritation of the treated areas. In rare cases, you may feel lightheaded or nauseous shortly after your session.

Q: Is there anyone who should NOT get cupping?

A: There are a few conditions and situations where cupping is not appropriate. If you’re on high doses of blood thinners, or if you are thin, frail or have fragile skin, cupping is not appropriate. Similarly, if you have active cancer, skin trauma or a blood disorder, you should stay away from it until your circumstances change. In any case, always share your medication list and health history with your practitioner before a session.

“Unfortunately, there’s no certifying body for cupping,” says Lehmann. “If you’re working with an acupuncturist to treat an imbalance and you feel like you’re not getting better, you might ask if cupping can help.”

Sometimes our bodies need support. Since cupping may help reduce inflammation and enhances circulation, it could be just what your body needs to get back on a path toward wellness. As with any therapy, talk to your doctor before doing a session to ensure it’s appropriate for you.

Cupping Therapy

Acupuncture is the practice of applying a thin, solid, stainless steel needle into tissue and then activating the point through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation. Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years. It is part of the ancient practice of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and more recently Contemporary Medical Acupuncture (CMA). Practitioners choose points on the body lying on connected pathways or meridians to apply needles which can help improve circulation, promote relaxation of muscle, help neurological function, and provide pain relief.

Most insurance companies cover acupuncture sessions, and our patients consistently report relief from many ailments after beginning a course of treatment. In our clinical experience, acupuncture has shown to be a valid and useful adjunct to other therapies provided to maximize a patient’s recovery from injury and to promote a sense of general health and well-being.

This article explains how acupuncture works, its benefits, and the potential side effects. It will also cover what conditions acupuncture may be used for.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Researchers don’t fully understand how acupuncture might work, but some theories include:

  • Acupuncture may stimulate the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain-relieving chemicals.
  • Acupuncture may influence the autonomic nervous system, and needle placement may impact breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate.

What Is Acupuncture Done For?

Acupuncture may be useful for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis, which describes conditions that involve joint inflammation
  • Long-term pain
  • Depression
  • Insomnia, a condition that involves sleep-related difficulties
  • Migraines, which are intense headaches that often include other symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Sinus congestion, or nasal stuffiness
  • Stress
  • Infertility, which describes difficulty getting pregnant
  • Addiction
  • Skin appearance4

What Are the Health Benefits of Acupuncture?

The health benefits of acupuncture can vary depending on the individual. Keep in mind that it may take several acupuncture sessions before you notice any benefits.

Research on the health benefits of acupuncture is still limited, however, there are some studies that found acupuncture to be helpful for specific conditions.

Low Back Pain

A study on non-drug treatment options for lower back pain showed that acupuncture led to less intense pain and better back functioning right after a treatment. In the long term, however, it was not clear how helpful acupuncture treatment was.

Migraines

Research on migraines done over a six month period showed that:

  • Acupuncture was able to reduce the frequency of migraine symptoms by half in 41% of those in the study compared to those not getting any acupuncture.
  • Acupuncture was noted as being about as helpful as preventative migraine medications.

The Benefits and Side Effects of Acupuncture

Tension Headaches

According to research, having at least six acupuncture sessions may be helpful for those with frequent head pain or pressure, also known as tension headaches. This study also noted that acupuncture added along with pain medication led to less headache frequency when compared to those only given medication.

Knee Pain

Research that looked at multiple studies suggested that acupuncture may be able to improve the physical function of the knee in the short and long term in individuals who have knee osteoarthritis. With this condition, the connective tissue in the knee breaks down. This study also found that acupuncture was able to help those with knee osteoarthritis decrease their knee pain, but this was only helpful in the short term.

Another review that looked at multiple studies found that acupuncture delayed and reduced the use of pain medication in those who had knee replacement surgery.

Recap

Some research suggests that acupuncture may help with knee functioning and knee pain in those who have osteoarthritis.

It is also associated with using less pain medication after having knee replacement surgery.

 Turning to Acupuncture for Sciatica

Facial Elasticity

Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial acupuncture, is used to improve the appearance of the skin on the head, face, and neck. In a small study where individuals had five acupuncture sessions in three weeks, a little over half of the participants showed an improvement in skin elasticity, which helps skin look plump.

How Is Acupuncture Done?

Prior to getting acupuncture, your acupuncturist will ask about your health history and may give you a physical examination.

During the acupuncture session, thin needles are placed in specific areas to address your concern or condition. The acupuncturist may gently twist the needles for added effect. The needles are often left in for 15 to 20 minutes, with the total session lasting anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

Your acupuncturist may use additional techniques during your session including:

  • Moxibustion This involves the use of heated sticks, made from dried herbs, held near the acupuncture needles to warm and stimulate the acupuncture points.
  • Electroacupuncture An electrical device is connected to several needles, providing a weak electrical current that stimulates the acupuncture needles during the treatment.
  • Cupping: Glass or silicone cups are applied to the skin so that there is a suction effect, which aims to help stimulate blood flow and balance your energy

After the treatment, some people may feel relaxed, while others may feel energetic. If you experience any unusual symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider.

Recap

During an acupuncture session, your acupuncturist will place needles in specific areas and may leave them in for about 20 minutes. Other techniques like twisting, or adding heat may also be done.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

You may feel a slight sting, pinch, ache, or some pain as the acupuncture needle is being inserted. Some acupuncturists move the needle after it has been placed in the body, which can cause additional pressure.

Once the needle has been properly placed, you may feel a tingling or heavy feeling, which is referred to as de qi.

Let your acupuncturist know if you are uncomfortable or in a lot of pain at any point during the session. Intense pain may mean the needle has not been inserted or placed correctly.

Does Acupuncture Have Side Effects?

As with any treatment, acupuncture may cause side effects in some individuals. Side effects may include:

  • Pain and bleeding from the needle insertion
  • Nausea
  • Infections
  • Skin rash
  • Allergic reaction
  • Bruising around the area the needles were placed
  • Dizziness

Less common are serious side effects such as blood vessel and nerve injury, complications from the needle breaking during treatment, organ injuries, as well as brain and spinal cord injuries. While rare, acupuncture complications can lead to death.

In order to reduce the risk of side effects, acupuncture should always be done by a licensed and properly trained healthcare provider using clean, disposable needles.

It’s a good idea to speak with your primary care physician before getting acupuncture, as this treatment may not be right for people with certain health conditions.

Summary

Researchers aren’t exactly sure how acupuncture works, however, theories suggest that it may help release endorphins, as well as influence the autonomic nervous system.

Acupuncture may be helpful for a variety of concerns, including some mental health disorders, pain, inflammatory conditions, stress, and skin appearance. However, keep in mind that acupuncture can lead to mild or serious side effects in some individuals.

An acupuncture session can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and usually involves about 20 minutes with the needles in. Some individuals may feel some pain or pressure while the needles are inserted, while others may feel different sensations while the needles are in.
