This June, we’re proud that members of Square’s culinary community are participating in EAT (RED). DRINK (RED). SAVE LIVES, an initiative by the organization (RED) to raise money to fight AIDS.
To get involved, simply turn a dish on your menu (RED)—from tomato soup to tuna tartare—and donate a portion of the sales to the fight against AIDS. You can also order our Special Edition SQUA(RED) reader; for each $10 reader ordered, enough money goes to the Global Fund to provide more than 24 days of life-saving medication for someone living with HIV in Africa.
Jill Butler, who owns the Houston food truck Monster PBJ tells us why she got involved—and offers advice to other businesses looking to give back. As you can see, a little (RED) can make a big difference.
Square: Why did you decide to order the (RED) reader?
Butler: It’s such a low-cost, easy way to help out that it was a no-brainer. It’s nice because the color of the reader really gets customers’ attention and they often ask questions about it. It’s a great way for us to help raise awareness about the cause.
How is giving back to the community good for business?
For us, giving back to the community is a big part of our identity; it’s about who we are as a company and who we want to be. We are grateful to have such great community support and we’re happy to give back and provide support for people and animals who need it. We know that when communities are healthy, happy, and productive—everyone wins. We also know that we can’t sit around and expect others to solve problems so we do what we can, when we can.
What advice do you have for other sellers who want to give back to the community?
Find causes you believe in and that resonate with you and your employees. Getting your whole staff involved in community-giving is a great way to increase morale and make people happy about coming to work. Also, start small and don’t assume that what you have to give is not enough; it doesn’t take much to have an impact.
