SAN FRANCISCO – May 8, 2013 – Square, the company making commerce easy for everyone, has hired Demetrios J. Marantis to lead the company’s international government, regulatory, and policy work. Marantis brings his extensive experience in international relations and strong understanding of government affairs to Square, which is increasingly focused on expanding internationally. Marantis most recently served in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet as the Acting United States Trade Representative, the country’s chief trade negotiator.

“Square is already having a meaningful impact on local economies in the US and Canada,” said Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Square. “Demetrios’ invaluable experience will help Square provide powerful business tools to local entrepreneurs around the world.”

Marantis first served in the White House as the Deputy United States Trade Representative, where he was responsible for US trade negotiations and enforcement in Asia and Africa. President Obama nominated him for that position, and he was confirmed by the Senate in 2009. In March 2013, Marantis assumed the duties of Acting United States Trade Representative. Before joining the Administration, Marantis served as Chief International Trade Counsel for the Senate Finance Committee, where he advised Congress on trade and economic issues. Marantis holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and an A.B. in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University.

Square’s recent growth has been fueled by international expansion and increased adoption by brick and mortar merchants. In Canada, Square’s first market outside the US, gross payment volume over the first six months is 90% higher per capita than it was in the US at the equivalent point in time.
