Overview

How does it work?

You can check your eligibility for Square Installments through our simple online application. If you’re approved and accept a plan, you will receive a 16-digit number that you can use to pay for your purchase. Once you’ve given the merchant that number, we will then pay the merchant on your behalf, and you pay us back in fixed monthly payments.

Where is Square Installments available?

At this time, Square Installments is only available to Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington residents who make purchases at select Square merchants.

How much can I pay using Square Installments?

You can apply to pay using Square Installments for purchases of $250 to $10,000 from select Square merchants.

Application

How do I apply?

Step 1: Enter a few pieces of information and find out if you qualify.

Step 2: If you’re approved and accept a plan, you’ll get a digital card to complete your purchase in store or over the phone. Simply provide your digital card to the merchant when you are ready to pay. You will also get an email with your digital card number. This card is only valid for one-time use and expires if not used in 7 days.

How quickly will I get a decision?

Many customers will receive an instant decision. Any exceptions will be reviewed and notified of eligibility within one to two business days.

Will my credit score be affected?

When you check your eligibility for Square Installments, we perform a soft credit check to verify your identity and determine if you meet our basic criteria. This soft credit check will not affect your credit score. If you are approved and choose to pay with Square Installments, then your credit report will show an inquiry from Square Capital, which could affect your credit score.

What if I’m not eligible for Square Installments?

If we aren’t able to approve your application for Square Installments, we will notify you of our decision and decline reason via email. You will still have the ability to pay for your purchase with a card or cash. Learn more about why your application was declined.

How do I choose a payment method?

If you are eligible to pay using Square Installments, you’ll be prompted to select a payment method for your plan. We provide two different payment methods: Automatic Payments or Manual Payments.

If you select Automatic Payments, which sets you up for automatic debit payments each month, you will receive a 1% APR discount, bringing your APR down from 9.99% to 8.99%. Please note: Automatic Payments requires a valid US non-prepaid debit card. You can turn Automatic Payments on or off at any point during your plan, but the APR discount is only available for those who select the option when accepting the plan.

If you select Manual Payments, you agree to make monthly one-time payments. You may pay electronically with the Square Installments Dashboard, or pay by check or money order.

Cost

How much will it cost to pay using Square Installments?

If you pay with Square Installments, an annual percentage rate (APR) of 9.99% will apply to the amount of your purchase. You can reduce that APR to 8.99% by choosing to pay using automatic payments during the application process.

No other fees or costs apply when using Square Installments.

How long do I have to pay Square Capital back?

It depends on the plan you pick. If you are eligible for Square Installments you can select to pay Square Capital back monthly over 3, 6, or 12 months.

How much will I pay back each month?

How much you pay each month will depend on the amount of your specific purchase and whether you choose a 3, 6, or 12-month repayment option. Each payment goes towards paying down the original purchase and interest. Interest is calculated based on a fixed monthly rate (the advertised annual rate divided by 12) and is assessed daily against the loan’s outstanding principal balance.

As an example, if you made all payments on time for a $1,000 purchase at an APR of 9.99%:

Amount Financed Payment Schedule Expected Interest (Finance Charge) Repayment Amount APR
$1,000.00 3 month term: 2 monthly payments of $339.00 and 1 payment of $338.68 $16.68 $1,016.68 9.99%
$1,000.00 6 month term: 5 monthly payments of $172.00 and 1 payment of $169.25 $29.25 $1,029.25 9.99%
$1,000.00 12 month term: 11 monthly payments of $88.00 and 1 payment of $86.83 $54.83 $1,054.83 9.99%

The expected interest and repayment amounts assume you will make all payments in full on the scheduled installment due dates. Late payments or payments of less than the full amount due may result in higher interest charges and repayment amounts.

Are there any late fees?

You will never be charged a fee for a late payment. However, we do calculate interest based on any remaining principal balance, so if your payment is late and there is past due principal, interest may be charged against that larger amount.

The interest rate (the same percentage as the APR) will never change throughout the loan. And, unlike a credit card, we will never charge compound interest (i.e. interest charged on interest).

Payments

When are my payments due?

Your monthly payment due dates will be listed on the payment schedule we provide you when you accept a plan.

However, you have up to 7 days to use your Square Installments digital card. If you don’t use your card on the same day you accept a plan, then we will send you an updated payment schedule before your first payment is due. Your first payment will generally be due a month after you use the digital card.

How do I update my debit card on file?

To update your debit card on file, please do so in your Square Installments Dashboard. You will need the email address associated with your plan to sign in. Please note: The card must be a non-prepaid, US debit card.

I’m set up for manual payments. How do I switch to automatic payments?

If you would like to switch your payment method, please do so in your Square Installments Dashboard. You will need the email address associated with your plan to sign in.

How do I make a one-time payment?

If you would like to make a one-time payment, please contact us.

Will I get a payment reminder?

Of course. We will send you a courtesy reminder email 10 days before each monthly payment is due.

Do you report my repayments to the credit bureaus?

At this time, we do not report repayment activity to any credit bureaus.

How do I mail you payments?

If you are sending a check or money order, please follow the instructions below:

Are there any prepayment fees?

We do not charge prepayment fees. You can make a partial or full prepayment at any time, at no additional cost. And, assuming all of your other payments have been on time, if you make a partial prepayment, we’ll apply your payment toward any outstanding principal you still have.

To make a prepayment (either full or partial), simply sign into your Square Installments Dashboard. If you want to pay off the balance in full, we can provide you a precise payoff amount, which will include the remaining principal balance and any interest due. Simply contact us to find out the payoff amount.
