Provisional Activation with Square

With provisional activation, sellers new to Square can start accepting payments right away, and complete account activation at a later time.

When you create a new Square account and connect it to your eCommerce site, you’re able to accept payments online for 7 days from the date of your first payment, or up to $2,000 — whichever occurs first. During this time, funds from payments will remain in your Square balance until you complete activation and link a supported bank account or sign up for a Square Card for deposits.

Get Started

Once you select Square as the payment processor for your eCommerce site, you’ll be required to provide Square with the following details in order to be granted provisional activation:

  • First and Last Name
  • E-mail address
  • Country in which you’ll be processing card payments

After confirming these details, you’ll receive an email from Square inviting you to claim your account.

Complete Account Activation

In order to finish activating your Square account and start receiving deposits, you’ll need to complete identity verification.

To get started, search for an account activation reminder email from Square and click the included link. You can also sign in to your online Square Dashboard and click the bell notification to verify your identity.

Once you’ve finished activating your account, link a supported bank account or sign up for a Square Card to start receiving deposits from Square.

Keep in mind, if you do not complete account activation within 7 days of your first payment, or before accepting $2000, your ability to process payments will be paused. You will then have 21 days to complete account activation before all of your completed payments are refunded to your customers.

Provisional Activation FAQs

Before you can start receiving deposits from Square, you’ll need to complete activation by verifying your identity and link a supported bank account or sign up for a Square Card.

Why can’t I accept more payments?

If you do not complete account activation within 7 days of your first payment, or before accepting $2,000, your ability to take payments will be paused until you have completed activation. Where can I complete activation?

You can search for an account activation reminder email from Square and click the included link to get started. You can also sign in to your online Square Dashboard and click the notification to verify your identity.

How many days do I have to complete account activation?

You can process $2000, or up to 7 days from the time of your first payment — whichever happens first. You will then have 21 days to complete activation before your payments are refunded to your customers.

What if I fail identity verification?

Your Square account will not be activated and all payments will be refunded to your customers.

When will my payments be refunded?

If you do not complete account activation within 28 days of your first payment, all sales will be refunded back to your customers.

It takes 2-7 business days to process a refund with Square. Once the refund is processed and sent to your customer’s card issuing bank, it can take another 2-7 business days (depending on the bank’s processing speeds) for the refund to post to your customer’s account. In total, it can take 9-14 business days for your customer to receive their refund.
