Recognize and Report Suspicious Account Activity

If you notice a transaction or change made to your account that you didn’t authorize, contact us right away.

If you have security concerns about your account, please do the following:

Reset Your Password

Visit squareup.com/password. Choose a complex and unique password that is at least eight characters long, with a mix of numbers, symbols, and capital and lowercase letters. Avoid using your name, email address, mobile number, birthday, or any other personal information in the new password. If you use the same password for other services, it’s a good idea to change those passwords as well.

Protect Yourself

Square will not ask you to send sensitive information such as your email address, password, identification information, bank account details, or debit/credit card information over email, phone, or text message. Phishing emails may look similar to official emails from Square, so learn how to recognize and report phishing scams.

Set Up 2-Step Verification

2-Step Verification — also known as two-factor authentication (2FA) — is a tool that provides an extra layer of security for your Square account, protecting your account from unauthorized access. All you’ll need is a phone number or authenticator app. Learn more about how to set up two-step verification.

Add a Secure Contact Method

In instances that Square detects unusual activity on your account and needs to contact the account holder, you can add an additional secure contact method to your Square account as a backup. Adding a secondary contact method enhances account security and helps you access and recover your account, if needed.

You can add a secure contact method by going to Account & Settings > Personal Information > Sign in & security in your online Square Dashboard and proceeding through the verification process.

If you ever need to update any of the secure contact methods for your account, go to Account & Settings, select Manage ways to verify it’s you, proceed through the verification process, and update the phone number or email address in question. Once your secure contact method is verified, you can also add it as a 2-Step Verification contact method.
