Can I Transfer Ownership of a Square Account?

Square account ownership is non-transferable in countries outside of the U.S. and Canada at this stage.

Because a Square account is tied to a designated account holder’s information and VAT or company registration number (CRN), we are unable to transfer ownership of a Square account.

For businesses with multiple business owners, if the designated account holder resigns or is no longer with the business, authorised users will continue to have access to the account, however, the designated account holder will be responsible for transferring the email, updating the password and security questions. Ability to remove the designated business owner from account access is unavailable, therefore a new account would need to be set up, with the new company ownership structure.

If you’re the new account holder and the original account holder is no longer associated with the business or organisation, we recommend the following:

  1. Download the previous account’s sales history.

  2. Contact the previous account holder and request that they deactivate the current Square account.

  3. Activate a new Square account using your own information. The same business name and bank account can be used, assuming no other changes to the business ownership structure occurred, regardless of whether they were used with the previous account.
