Square Account FAQ

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about accepting payments with Square.

Account Questions

Why can’t I sign in to my account?

There are a number of reasons why you may not be able to sign in. Resetting your password is the first step towards regaining access to your account. Click Forgot Password, confirm the email address used to register for Square, and follow the instructions in the email sent to that address.

You may also be using an incorrect phone number for two-step verification. Two-step verification is a tool that provides an extra layer of security for your Square Account, protecting your account from unauthorised access. Once you set up and activate your Square account, you’ll be prompted to enable two-step verification.

Learn more about resetting two-step verification.

Where can I use Square?

You can use Square in the country where you activated your account.

Why can’t I view my online Square Dashboard?

Your online Square Dashboard can be accessed using a mobile browser, but full dashboard functionality is only available on web browsers. If you’re having trouble with your Square Dashboard on a laptop or desktop, you may be experiencing an issue with your internet browser.

How do I access my Square account from another device?

If you’ve purchased a new device, you can download the Square Point of Sale app and sign in to your existing account with the associated email address and password.

If you have multiple locations, you can use Device Codes to link mobile devices to specific locations. Device codes also allow you to log in without an email address and password.

Do I Have a Merchant ID or Account Number?

Square is a payment card processing company, but we don’t give our account holders individual merchant ID numbers. Although we don’t assign specific numbers, your business is still designated as a merchant with Square, and your Square merchant account is associated with your email address.

Account Basics

How do I create items?

Creating an Item Library helps you quickly add items to sales, manage taxes, track inventory, and build insightful reports on what’s selling. Having Items is also useful when sending Square Marketing campaigns and setting up Square Loyalty programs for specific products.

Follow these steps on building your Item Library from the Square app or the online Square Dashboard.

Can I use Square abroad?

Card payment acceptance with the Square app is currently available in Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, France, and Spain. Payments can only be processed in the country in which you activate your account. For example, if you activate your account in Australia, you’re not able to process card payments in Japan, and vice versa.

Bank Account and Transfers

How long does it take to link my bank account?

Once you’ve entered your bank information, Square will send and debit a small amount to and from your account (resulting in no difference to your balance). This is not a charge, but simply Square sending a verification deposit to confirm we can both send and retrieve money in case of refunds.

The entire bank verification process can take up to four business days, and we’re unable to expedite the process at this time. To check your bank verification status, visit your online Square Dashboard.

How do I link or edit my bank account?

Bank accounts can be linked and edited from Account & Settings in your online Square Dashboard. From this section of your Square account, you can also link multiple external bank accounts by clicking Add external bank account. From here, enter your bank account details and complete the bank verification process.

You can also link or edit your bank account details in the Square POS app. To do so, go to ≡ More > Settings > Account > Bank account in the Square app utilising the full BSB and account number.

Verification for bank accounts can take up to 4 business days, and the status of the account’s verification is available within the online Square Dashboard.

When will my money be transferred?

Payments are sent to your linked bank account following our standard transfer schedule. If you accept transactions after 12.00 AM Melbourne time, set your close of day time after your businesses’ closing time to ensure you receive a single transfer for a full day’s business activity. A close of day after 12.00 AM Melbourne time will delay your transfer by one business day. Learn more about your transfer schedule options.
