Get Started with Square for Retail on Square Register

Before You Begin

To access Square for Retail features on Square Register, you’ll need to sign up for a Square for Retail Free or Square for Retail Plus plan. A free 30-day trial is available when you sign up for Square for Retail Plus, which includes advanced inventory management features to easily track, order and manage inventory.

Sign In to Square Retail POS

Follow the instructions below to sign in and set up the Square Retail POS app on Square Register as a first-time or existing user.

I’m setting up Square Register for the first time

Before signing in to Square Retail POS, complete the initial Square Register setup.

  1. Check for a software update on your Square Register by tapping Change Settings > General > About Register > Software Update.
  2. Once you confirm your Square Register is up to date, sign in to Square for Retail using your email address and password or by using a device code. Learn how to create a device code.
  3. On the ‘Choose your Point of Sale’ screen, tap Square for Retail > Continue.
  4. Choose an existing device to pair, then tap Continue. If you don’t have a device, tap Create New Device.
  5. Once you log in, you can start accepting payments.

I currently use Square Register

If you’re logged in to the Square Point of Sale app on Square Register, you’ll need to sign out of the device before using Square Retail POS. To sign out:

  1. Open your Square Point of Sale app. Tap ≡ More, scroll down, and tap Sign out.
  2. Tap Sign out again to confirm.
  3. Check for a software update on your Square Register by tapping Change Settings > General > About Register > Software Update to access the latest features.
  4. Once you confirm your Square Register is up to date, sign in to Square for Retail using your email address and password or by using a device code. Learn how to create a device code.
  5. On the ‘Choose your Point of Sale’ screen, tap Square for Retail > Continue.
  6. Choose an existing device to pair, then tap Continue. If you don’t have a device, tap Create New Device.
  7. Once you log in, you can start accepting payments.

Note: If you’re logged in to Square Retail POS and want to revert to Square Point of Sale, tap ≡ More > Account > Sign out > Sign out to sign out of Square Retail POS. 

All transaction, customer and catalogue data will sync between the Square for Retail and Square Point of Sale apps.

Will I have the same access to the same features?

Yes, you’ll still have access to all of the same Square for Retail tools on your Square Register. Learn more about all the Square for Retail Free, Plus and Premium features.

How much does this cost?

Square for Retail Plus or Premium includes a 30-day free trial and is $109 per location, per month.

The rate for Square for Retail Free or Plus on Square Register is 1.6% per card-present transaction.

Can I accept Afterpay in person with Square Register?

Yes! Your Square hardware will allow customers to pay for in-person goods and services using their Afterpay Card via a digital wallet such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Learn more about Afterpay Card and how it works.

Set up is easy—your Square Register, Square Terminal, Square Stand and Square Reader will automatically be set up so your customers can pay for in-person goods or services as soon as Afterpay is enabled from your online Square Dashboard. No additional integration or hardware setup is required.

Can I use the regular Square Point of Sale and Square for Retail Free, Plus or Premium on my device at the same time?

You are able to use both Square Point of Sale and Square for Retail Free/Plus/Premium on your device, but you cannot use them at the same time. To switch between the two, you’ll need to log out of Square Point of Sale and sign in to Square for Retail Free/Plus/Premium, and vice versa.

Can I have inventory tracking on by default?

Yes. Track inventory for any item variations created on your Square Dashboard or in the app for Square for Retail Free and Square for Retail Plus.
