The Square Guide to Quirky, Handmade Gifts This Christmas
Finding it tricky to choose unusual and personal Christmas gifts for your loved ones or office Secret Santa? Fear not, because with thousands of unique businesses trading through Square, this was an easy one for us (although whittling down the list wasn’t so easy). If you’ve still got stockings to fill, here’s a selection of talented sellers who create and sell quirky, handmade products.
For the landmark enthusiast
Flax Fox, Belfast
Danielle Morgan is a Belfast-based artist and illustrator who sketches and paints local landmarks and buildings. She prints her creations onto a range of products, including tea towels, bags, t-shirts and cards.
She also accepts commissions if you want something even more original.
Square recommends: Giant’s Causeway Screen Printed Artist Tea Towel, £12.
For the hipster in your life
Brilliant Neon, London
If you know someone who’s obsessed with Tokyo’s luminous nighttime streets, Brilliant Neon might just be the fit. Neil and Stephen have a vision to make the beauty and joy of neon available to everyone, whatever your budget.
And if you’re looking to brighten up your own office or store in the new year, they supply bespoke neons and other LED signage especially for small businesses.
Square recommends: Designing your own, £Depends on the size.
For that special someone who’s always got the kettle on
Brew Tea Company, Manchester
Brew Tea Company is on a mission to make tea awesome. They only use 100% rolled whole leaves, and cut out CTC methods — which makes a far tastier brew. Everything is done in-house: tasting, crafting and hand-packing. They even make their own tea bags.
Square recommends: The Christmas Cuppa Pack, which comes with two tea blends and a branded mug, £14.
For the book-worm
The Book Matchmaker, Shrewsbury
Deciding what book to buy for someone can take months of research. With The Book Matchmaker, you simply choose from a selection of mystery four-word titles given by the company to describe their hand-picked novels. The book then gets wrapped up in their own crafted wrapping paper — along with a hot drink and love letter explaining the concept — and sent to the recipient.
The company refers to its wrapped books as “Blind Book Dates”, because “just like a normal date you may not have an attraction at first sight, but after spending some time getting to know your date you may even fall in love”.
Square recommends: Book Date monthly subscription, £11.99.
For the home-maker
Cozy Glow, Coulsdon
If you’re looking for homely gifts that add a bit of magic and warmth, Cozy Glow produce health-conscious candles that deliver a higher-quality fragrance without using any nasty chemicals. Instead of paraffin and petroleum (which are harmful to the environment), theirs’ are made from 100% soya. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a company that’s more passionate about candles, with an entire section of their website explaining the production process and benefits of soya wax.
Square recommends: Christmas pudding soy candle, £7.95 (regular).
